"During my final year I linked in with the Careers Service and signed up to the jobs board. I found and applied to an advertised Trainee CAD Engineer vacancy. Using their workshops to build my confidence and skills I applied and was I successful. Thanks to the Careers Service I found and I am now working in my dream job!"
Nathan Coombes, HNC Construction – Partner Colleges
“We found that the University of Plymouth Careers Service provided an excellent route for us to gain contact with appropriately qualified engineers. This proved successful for both us as a company and for graduates who had recently completed their course”

Would you like to offer an enthusiastic University of Plymouth student an internship?
Employing an intern is a cost-effective, flexible method of identifying a talented individual and using their skills and enthusiasm to contribute to your organisation.
An intern can fill a skills gap, contribute to a one-off project or help determine whether there is a scope for a more permanent position.
This is also an opportunity to bring in a new perspective and fresh ideas to your organisation whilst providing valuable work experience to our students.
The University of Plymouth, as one of the Santander Partner Universities, can offer funding to enable SMEs to recruit students or graduates as an intern.
Therefore, if you are you seeking the expertise of one of our students and/or recent graduates but finances are holding you back then the Santander work experience bursary may be for you.
We are able to offer funding support to an SME employer which will offset the cost of hiring our alumni into a graduate role. The amount is intended to partially cover the employees’ wages which should be match funded by your organisation. The funding can contribute £157.50 per week for up to 10 weeks, with the expectation that the organisation will contribute at least £157.50 per week to the wages also.
To be eligible your organisation must meet the following criteria:
- You are a small and/or medium enterprise (SME) with fewer than 250 employees
- You have a turnover of less than £50 million a year
- You can provide a contract of employment and pay the employee through your payroll system
- Your organisation has suitable liability insurance
- Your organisation can have a maximum of two placements a year.
"SD Hardware is a fast-growing business and we needed help with various projects for our e-commerce site. The University of Plymouth with Santander combined to offer an internship that would help with not just the employer but also the candidate to learn new skills. We decided on Daniel. I have to say that this was one of the best decision I have made. Not quite understanding exactly how we would achieve the projects that I wanted, Daniel came in and very quickly and professionally understood what needs to be done. Not only has he completed the required tasks he went on to show and guide SD Hardware to a new level of understanding of our internal IT system and how it can work more efficiently. I would not hesitate in using an intern from the University of Plymouth and recommending to other companies. It has made me understand my companies IT needs and has added real short and long-term value."
– Gary Ewings, Managing Director, SD Hardware
