Homestay

Homestay information for landlords

The number of international students, and students studying here for less than a full academic year, has increased over recent years. With this in mind, Homestay accommodation, where a student rents a room in a landlords’ own home, is an attractive option for students and visiting staff members.

Plymouth University will consider properties which are located within a two mile radius of its main campus. The standard of accommodation is exceptionally high throughout the city, and this must also be reflected in any property that we consider including on our Studentpad database.

If you would like to be included on our Studentpad database, it is necessary for you to complete, sign and return to us the Landlord Registration Form for Homestay Accommodation, together with your current gas safety record and a signed copy of our Landlord Guidelines for Homestay Landlords.

All landlord-owned property must have the following safety features in place:

  • a current gas safety record
  • a battery-operated fire alarm unit on each level of the property
  • a fire blanket in the kitchen area
  • a small household fire extinguisher
  • a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector.

We are unable to promote any property which lacks any of the above.

We would expect your student tenants to be welcomed into the lounge area of your home if they do not have their own separate student lounge.

Your property will be included on our Studentpad database and we will take reasonable steps to promote any vacancies that you have to our students.

We will inform our student customers that we have not visited your property and that we assume no responsibility for the condition or presentation of your property nor the accuracy, currency or completeness of the information you provide, and it is their responsibility to ensure that your home meets their personal requirements.  However, it is your responsibility to ensure that your property has the above listed safety measures in place, and that information and photographs you place on Studentpad are an accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date representation of your home.

It can be a rewarding and enriching experience for our students living in Homestay, where they are made to feel welcome and part of the ‘family’.  We would like to thank you for considering welcoming one of our students into your home.
