Welcome

Welcome to the School of Health Professions where we pride ourselves in the quality and professionalism of our academic offer and where our programmes are designed to meet the demands of contemporary health and social care practice. 

As you begin your professional journey we will encourage you reach your full potential and achieve excellence in your chosen discipline. We also want you to enjoy your time with us and hope that you will embrace some of the social and recreational opportunities that are such an important aspect of university life.

From the Induction timetable you will see that many activities have been arranged for you and it is important that you attend all of these. These activities will help familiarise you with your chosen programme, introduce you the Peninsula Allied Health Centre and the main city centre university campus and also signpost some of the support services available to you.

Monday 16 September – Today's sessions will be held at the Peninsula Allied Health Centre (PAHC) with an self directed orientation to the Seale Hayne Library at Drake Circus and optional meal at The Mission

9:00–9:30: Registration and coffee – GF24

09:30–10:00: Welcome to the School of Health Professions  (Sara Demain) – LT1

10:00–11:00: Overview of masters level provision and generic shared elements – who’s who including overview of quality structure, student reps, role of personal tutor, exam panels and boards  (Claire Hornsby) – LT1

11:00–12:00: Introduction to the Student Union, Networking and Cream Tea

12.00-13.00:  Administration session – SF35. Please bring your passport. Card collection*** (please see details below)

11:45–13:00: Introduction to library and literature searching – LT1

Today's events

* Occupational health

You will undertake a series of occupational health appointments over the next four months. It is important that you attend your designated occupational health appointment as this is a condition of attendance in placement areas.

Your first appointment will be scheduled on one of the two dates below:

  • Friday 20 September 2019

Venue: Babbage 403, 413, 415, 417

Your individual appointment date and time will be available during your first day at University. One of the rooms will be designated as a reception. Please report to the reception room in the first instance.

When attending your first appointment please ensure you bring a record of any immunisations you may have had. Please also be aware your first inoculation may also take place at this appointment and it is important that you have had something to eat prior to this appointment.

If you have a needle phobia please advise occupational health before you start by emailing: plh-tr.OccHealth-preplacementscreening@nhs.net.

You will need to quote your name, date of birth and programme in any email to occupational health.

Future occupational health appointment dates and times will be forwarded to you via your University email account. The schedule of appointments will be posted on the programme moodle site for your information.

** Uniform fittings

It is compulsory that you attend this session so that your uniform fits properly and is ordered in time for your placement.

*** Card collection

We cannot issue your card if you do not bring your passport. Please note: your card is required to use the free bus scheme.

If you are currently a student on a different programme and already have a University of Plymouth card without the bus logo, please email: pahc.reception@plymouth.ac.uk and we will arrange for a new card to be issued.

Essential information

Please ensure you do the following before starting your programme:

  • Enrol online by 16 September 2019 – this gives you access to your timetable and triggers your student loan
  • Upload a photograph by 16 September 2019 – this allows your registration card to be printed

Passport checking during 16 September 2019

Please bring your passport to the administration session together with any certificates or documentation requested by admissions.

This will enable us to issue your University card, which you will need to access the University of Plymouth library, Students' Union and free bus service between the University of Plymouth and the Peninsula Allied Health Centre.

If your card is not available for any reason, you will not be able access the bus service free of charge.

Please note that there is no student parking on site.

Suggested Reading List

You will be provided with appropriate reading lists as you are introduced to each module, however you may wish to purchase some core texts listed below – note the ebooks mentioned below are freely accessible to all students once they register as student members of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.

 Information about membership will be provided during induction. The prices quoted below are a guide and accurate at the time of going to press.

Some bookshops do offer a discount on course books upon production of a letter confirming a place on the course, or a University ID card once you’ve enrolled, do clarify with the individual bookshop before you purchase.

We also suggest you try internet retailers where the price may be substantially cheaper and second hand copies may be available (although always check that you are purchasing the most recent edition of a text).

Essential information for new international students

Monday 17 – Friday 21 September daily between 16.30–17.00 Devonport Lecture Theatre, Portland Square.
This session is delivered by the International Student Advice (ISA) team and is an opportunity for new international students to meet the team and learn about the services they deliver. 

During this session the team will provide you with essential information designed to help you to settle in to living and studying in Plymouth. 
They will also advise you of your tier 4 visa responsibilities and answer any questions you may have related to your visa. 

There is no need to book in advance, you can just turn up.
