Project: Critical metals in deep sea nodules from the UK claim area in the Eastern Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone

Project overview

Deep sea nodules are Mn,Fe-rich concretions found on the ocean floor with high concentrations of economically important metals such as Mn, Ni and Cu. The nodules are also considered important deposits for critical metals such as Co, Rare Earth Elements (REE) and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). My research lies in understanding the geochemical and mineralogical composition and distribution of critical metals and their mineral host phases in nodules using a range of analytical methods. Using chemostratigraphic isotopic approaches, growth processes associated with nodule growth are also investigated. Overall, these are used to understand nodule formation in the deep ocean and their critical raw material potential.
