Mr Paul Murray

Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in Sustainable Construction and Surveying

Role

In 26 years as an H.E. educator, I have specialised in researching and developing  innovations that promote authentic learning, particularly in the field of education for sustainable development. My key innovations include:                

1. Self-leadership: for Sustainability: Funded through a HEFCE National Teaching Fellowship, I devised values-centred 'training' courses for empowering individuals to engage meaningfully with the sustainability agenda. with the notion of sustainability. Since 2005, over 1500 individuals have completed these courses including students, teachers, local government officers, business and charity-based professionals, HEFCE managers and 300 university academics and staff from all levels from Senior Management down.   

3/. Self-leadership: for Building Resilience: Devised in 2014 in partnership with my wife, Sheran, these courses offer workplace individuals the insights and tools they need to develop personal and professional resilience though enhanced self-awareness. 150 university staff have benefited from these courses, which we are now adapting for students as a small internally funded research project.

4/. My inter-active book The Sustainable Self (Earthscan 2011) supplements the 'sustainability' based training courses. The book has proved popular as an educational course and is used as a core text by universities and colleges across the world. In 2013, the book was translated and published in the Russian Federation by BKL (Binom Knowledge Laboratory).  

Supporting Teaching and Learning 

I have developed and delivered effective flexible learning techniques and materials within my core discipline and  frequently provide mentor support to new lecturers and peers.

I am an Approval Panel Chair for Plymouth's Quality Enhancement unit and am a past tutor on Plymouth's postgraduate course for new lecturers.

  • 2016 and 2017: Invited judge national Green Gown Awards 
  • 2014: Led Plymouth University's initiative to become an official signatory of the United Nations PRME initiative (Principles for Responsible Management Education)
  • 2013  Global Award for Best Practice in Sustainability Education (RICS)
  • 2007: Plymouth's first Green Gown recognition (Highly commended)
  • 2005: Founding Fellow of the £5 million HEFCE funded Centre for Sustainable Futures 
  • 2004: National Teaching Fellowship; (for a personal contribution to teaching excellence)

  • 2000   Awarded: £325K HEFCE FDTL award to disseminate excellence in flexible learning

Teaching interests

I teach in several areas:

  1. Sustainability - values, beliefs, ethics and behaviour, personalising sustainability, sustainability knowledge and skills for professional practice. I have taught this to learners in diverse disciplines including design, education, science and technology, engineering and construction
  2. Sustainable construction - sustainability issues, environmental impact assessment of buildings, contaminated land, specifying and managing safe and sustainable buildings
  3. Building Surveying - survey methods, building forensics, defect diagnosis and remediation, building reuse, building development and professional services

Research interests

My key research has been exploring the impacts of values-centred pedagogies across diverse disciplines and settings. This has mainly involved analysing pre and post training data on around 180 undergraduate participants to explore potential shifts in ecological world-views and values orientations arising as a result of training course participation. A follow up project in underway exploring the effect of self-leadership based resilience training on student wellbeing.

Historically, I have developed, evaluated and nationally disseminated high quality research-based flexible teaching and learning resources for use by built environment and engineering academics. Through the HEFCE-funded "Student-centred Learning in Construction Education" (SLICE) project, which I led,  Plymouth has become nationally recognised for excellence in flexible learning within the building and civil engineering subject areas.
