Profiles

Mr Paul Murray

Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in Sustainable Construction and Surveying

School of Art, Design and Architecture (Faculty of Arts and Humanities)

Role

With 25 years experience as an H.E. educator, I am passionate about researching and developing educational innovations that promote authentic learning, particularly in the field of education for sustainability.

One of my key innovations is the development of values-centred methods for developing self-leadership qualities to enhance professional performance, pro-sustainability behaviours and personal wellbeing. This work has two main branches:

1. Self-leadership for Sustainability: Using National Teaching Fellowship funding, I devised new, values-centred 'training' activities for engaging individuals from all disciplines, sectors and levels with the notion of sustainability using techniques that combine NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) , enquiry-based learning and personal development philosophies. I have successfully delivered the training as intensive workshops to well over 1500 individuals, including students, academics, government officers (including HEFCE staff) and business professionals. Since 2010 I have offered the workshops as formal staff training through the Organisational Development unit for individuals from all levels up to Senior Management. I have also provided several departmental Away Days. Overall, in excess of 300 staff have benefited from this training.

3/. Self-leadership for Resilience: Building on the sustainability training methods, this recent innovation helps individuals understand and use tools to develop resilience though self-awareness. To-date, this has been delivered successfully as staff development and is available externally on request through my partnership (with my wife Sheran) called Sustain-Able Training

I published the inter-active book The Sustainable Self (Earthscan 2011) to supplement or replace the training. The book was described in Innovations in Education and Teaching International as, "an excellent book and an excellent learning resource" (Lamb 2011). The Sustainable Self is used as the basis of staff and student development programmes in institutions in Australia, Spain, UK and the USA. In July 2013, The Sustainable Self was translated into Russian and published in the Russian Federation by BKL (Binom Knowledge Laboratory).

Supporting Teaching

I offer programmes on embedding sustainability within taught programmes based on my experiences leading the creation of Plymouth's unique Environmental Building Programmes.

I also actively support peers to develop outstanding teaching and learning in their discipline and act as mentor for new lecturers. .

Professional membership

Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Fellow of the Centre for Sustainable Futures 2005-2010

Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK

Teaching interests

I teach in several areas:

  1. Sustainability - values, beliefs, ethics and behaviour, personalising sustainability, sustainability knowledge and skills for professional practice. I have taught this to learners in diverse disciplines including design, education, science and technology, engineering and construction
  2. Sustainable construction - sustainability issues, environmental impact assessment of buildings, contaminated land, specifying and managing safe and sustainable buildings
  3. Building Surveying - survey methods, building forensics, defect diagnosis and remediation, building reuse, building development and professional services

Research interests

My most recent research is in the field of self-leadership and its application to the promotion of pro-sustainability behaviour and personal/professional resilience.

Since 2011, I have been evaluating the impacts of values-centred sustainability-related pedagogies across three disciplines; Design, Engineering and Building. The research involves the collation of pre and post training data on around 180 undergraduate participants to explore potential shifts in ecological world-views and values orientations arising as a result of the training.

I have developed high quality teaching and learning resources for use by academics both at Plymouth and nationally. Through the HEFCE-funded "Student-centred Learning in Construction Education" (SLICE) project, which I led,  Plymouth disseminated high quality  flexible learning materials within the on building and civil engineering programmes nationally. This was achieved by authoring a wide range of exemplar, open-access and adaptable flexible learning .
