Dr Mario Gianni

Dr Mario Gianni is a Lecturer in Robotics at the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (SECAM), University of Plymouth (UoP), UK, since September 2017, and founder of the Autonomous Mobile Robotics in Extreme Environments (AMREE) Research Lab at SECAM.
From April 2015 to September 2017 he was Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering “A. Ruberti”, University “La Sapienza” of Rome, Italy.
His knowledge and expertise mainly focus on the design and development of models and methods combining AI, Machine Learning, Control Theory and Optimization to solve complex problems in Robotics.
Dr Mario Gianni is PI of projects granted by EPSRC (NCNR EP/R02572X/1 - FPF 18-1141) and Innovate UK (KTP011575 - AB Precision Poole) to enhance automation and situational awareness of robotic systems for radiological mapping of nuclear sites, explosive ordinance disposal and long-term blade inspections in offshore wind farms. He was also among six winners from Epson Europe’s first ever Win-A-Robot contest where, in collaboration with Dr Alejandro Veliz Reyes, from the School of Art. Design and Architecture, has been awarded with three VT6L All-in-One 6-Axis robot manipulators.
Dr Mario Gianni successfully accomplished as WP leader the EU-FP7-ICT-609763 TRADR and the EU-FP7-ICT-247870 NIFTI projects deploying a team of ground and aerial robots to assess the damages to the historical buildings, churches and cultural artifacts of Amatrice and Mirandola cities in Italy, badly damaged by the earthquakes of 2012 and 2016.
Dr Mario Gianni’s research has been published in some of the most relevant journals of In-Field Robotics and targeted the major IEEE Robotic Conferences. He has also been appointed by the University of Winchester, UK, as external assessor for the Mock REF2 - Main Panel C, UOA 17 – REF2021.
He serves as peer reviewer and as committee member in several International Journals and Conferences in Robotics, including SSRR, Autonomous Robots, IROS, ICRA and the Journal of Field Robotics. He also act as reviewer of EPSRC, Innovate UK project proposals in the context of Robotics for Extreme Environments.

My previous research focused on Urban Search & Rescue Robotics. In this context, I designed an all-terrain 3D autonomous navigation framework for an articulated tracked robot and a framework for autonomous exploration, patrolling and coverage of rescue scenarios for a team of heterogeneous robots. Moreover, in 2012 and 2016, I participated in the deployment of ground and aerial robots to support the Italian National Fire Corp to assess the conditions of the interior and exterior of churches and buildings in Mirandola and Amatrice, in Italy, badly damaged by an earthquake.
Recently, my research moved toward the development of a framework for autonomous robotic inspection and radiological characterization of the interior of variable size, multi-path and non-planar stainless-steel pipes. My research activities are also devoted to developing enhanced automation, mobile navigation and situational awareness for remotely operated vehicles for explosive ordinance disposal.
My main interests are in pursuing efforts toward advancing the science and technology in modelling the dynamics of robotics systems also introducing the most advanced machine learning techniques, planning and control of these systems accounting for unknown and complex dynamic effects, different locomotion systems (mobile, legged, flying), resilience, dangerous environments and real deployment.
