Mrs Lowenna Tannian
School of Architecture, Design and Environment (HP) (Faculty of Arts & Humanities (HP))
I am an Associate Lecturer in the Environmental Building Group (EBG) for the Faculty of Arts.
I primarily teach the final year students modules in Building Surveying Practice and Development Managment, however I have a varied background in Construction Management and Project Management.
Recently joining the team in 2011, I have come straight from industry. I bring a professional and commercial slant to the student experience with a focus on getting students ready for the 'real world'. I also ensure that where possible, speakers from industry are invited to give talks with a view to reinforcing teaching and subject matter from the module core.
I am MRICS and have a good understanding of the APC process and what the students can expect when they embark upon their graduate placements. This is directly translated into the teaching and learning experience.
I also support the EBG team with creating contacts in industry for placements and site visits and assist in brining a hands on learning experience for all years.
I have a Masters in Building Surveying, but my graduate training position was with St George Plc on site in London. I completed the graduate programme with St George early and was promoted straight to Site Manager at the end of this period. My placements were at the notorious St George Wharf in Vauxhall and the slightly more sedate Battersea Reach at Wandsworth Bridge.
Following my time at St George I moved to a Project Managment position with CBRE, the largest property agent in the world. Here I completed my APC to full RICS membership. During my time at CBRE I was responsible for various aspects of several high profile projects. I was also trained as a CSH and LTH Assessor and ran the Sustainable Team for the Building Group Department.
MSc Building Surveying
Although I am allocated to teach Building Surveying Practice and Development Management I also assist in teaching Construction and Project Managment.
It is also my endevour to link subject matter that is essential to understanding the subject matters as a whole. For example, where finance and contracts are integral to the role of a Building Surveyor and/or Construction Manager, my lectures would touch on these topics where necessary to bring relevance.
