Role

I am part of the Care Leavers Service, working with students who have previously been in local authority care before coming to university.  We provide confidential support and signposting, a £2000 per year care leavers bursary and guaranteed accommodation on campus for 52 weeks of the year.

My role includes:

- providing regular one-to-one support to care leaver students
- offering an advocacy service
- supporting students during crisis
- managing the day-to-day running of the Care Leaver Service
- offering pre-entry taster days and other activities for looked after young people
- Offering transitions events for applicants and newly enrolled students at Plymouth University
- facilitating drop-in sessions for existing care leaver students
- running Care Advisory Knowledge Exchange (CAKE) group sessions, including input from university support services and other skills development activities
- offering a bespoke employability programme in partnership with the Employability Service
- working with external agencies such as Local Authorities to implement and grow the work of the Care Leavers Service
- managing Unite Scholarship Scheme
-running  awareness raising (of the service and of care leavers statistics) events for internal and external stakeholders
- providing training for staff and students on working with more vulnerable students and the basics of attachment theory
- representing the University and the Care Leavers Service at internal and external events

Qualifications

BA Hons History and English, Cardiff University

Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB)-Certificate in Counselling Studies Level 3

Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB)-Certificate in Counselling Skills Level 2

I have worked in higher education for 20 years in the areas of student recruitment, marketing, volunteering and widening participation (across institutions including Plymouth, Exeter, Marjons and City University London).  At City University I was Widening Participation Manager and  at Plymouth have previously held the posts of Widening Participation Officer for the Faculty of Health and Outreach Specialist.
