Professor Graham Sewell

Professor of Clinical Pharmaceutics/Associate Dean (Research)

Faculty of Health & Human Sciences

Role

Head of the School of Health Professions and Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Health, Education and Society.

Qualifications

Background to career
Graham Sewell obtained his first degree in pharmacy from the University of Bath and then underwent pre-registration training with Oxford Hospitals. Returning to Bath he completed his doctorate at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmacology and then held senior hospital pharmacist positions at Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth, combined in each case with the academic appointments of research fellow, lecturer and reader, respectively. During this time he continued to publish and developed a strong interest in both clinical and pharmaceutical aspects of oncology and in the application of the pharmaceutical sciences to clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice. In 1999, Graham returned to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of Bath as Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice.
In October 2004, he was approached by Kingston University to take the  post of Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and join the team leading the development and accreditation of the new School of Pharmacy at Kingston. During this time he also retained a practice base as Associate Director of Pharmacy at Plymouth Hospitals Trust. In October 2009, Graham took up his current position with Plymouth University as Head of the School of Health Professions and Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Health.
Graham has written around 150 peer-reviewed publications, including many in oncology-related topics, and is currently Associate Editor of the Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice. In November 2004, he was appointed Editor in Chief and Founding Editor of the new Journal of Hospital Pharmacy Science, an official journal of European Association of Hospital Pharmacists. His main research interests continue to focus on oncology and include clinical pharmacokinetics, formulation and drug delivery and ambulatory chemotherapy.
Within Pharmacy, Graham has served on, and chaired, numerous national and international committees, including membership of the WHO Expert Committee on cancer pain and palliative care, Chair of the Bath branch of the Pharmaceutical Society, and Chair of the industry-sponsored MARCH Panel. He was elected President of the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP), a global organisation, in 2004. Graham was presented with the McKinnon Award, the highest accolade awarded by ISOPP,  for his achievements in the research of oncology pharmacy at the joint HOPA/ISOPP Conference, Los Angeles, June 2008. Graham continues to research and publish in key areas, including his transformative work on dose-banding of cancer chemotherapy, and more recently on the environmental effect of cytotoxic drugs/metabolites from cancer patients which enter the water system and the food chain. This work has already resulted in two important publications in high-impact journals.

In his role as Head of the School of Health Professions, Graham has worked with 7 other healthcare disciplines to develop both teaching and research with continual improvement in performance and quality across a range of indicators. He recently led the development and accreditation of a new BSc(Hons) programme in Optometry, in a record time. His role as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty has seen his input focussed on preparation for the upcoming REF2014, the development of a new Institute and Research Centres, with Faculty colleagues, and setting the structure and priorities for the recently merged faculties of Health and Education.

Teaching interests

In my present position at Plymouth University I teach different aspects of clinical pharmacology and medicines management on various undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. I ocassionally teach pharmacy law and also quantitative research methods and statistical analysis.
I play a major role in programme validation and re-validation.

In my time at  Kingston University I developed and led a variety of undergraduate MPharm modules and, my teaching has covered the areas of Pharmacy Practice, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology. I was also a member of the core accreditation team for the new MPharm Programme

In my previous position at Bath University, I lead the development of a new interdisciplinary taught diploma/masters/doctorate in pharmacy and healthcare (Advanced Programme in Pharmacy Practice and Therapeutics, AP3T) and I Chaired the Postgraduate Board of Studies. I also led teaching and assessment in many areas of the MPharm programme, including pharmacy practice, clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutics. I have also helped develop, and have taught on, the Postgraduate Diploma in Oncology Pharmacy at the University of Valencia, Spain.

Throughout my career, my teaching experience has covered a wide range of healthcare, life-science and basic science disciplines. I have experience in teaching pharmacy, pharmacology, medical, nursing and also biology and chemistry students at undergraduate and postgraduate level over the last 15 years. In all cases, my taught sessions and module that I have led have received exceptional feed-back from students. My teaching has also been highly rated when subjected to peer review. In addition to teaching, I have an interest in the pastoral care of students and have many years experience as a personal tutor.
