Teaching interests

Bacteria, Archaea and viruses constitute over half of the biomass of life on Earth. They were the only form of life for over two thirds of the planet's existence and the development and continued maintenance of all other forms of life depend absolutely on the past and present activities of microbes. I am passionate about teaching the importance of microbes and enabling students to understand the remarkable new discoveries that are revolutionising our understanding of the field. especially in the marine environment. Such knowledge is vital at a time of rapid global change.

Research interests

I am fascinated by all aspects of microbiology, with particular interests in interactions between symbiotic and pathogenic microbes and their hosts. I have studied microbial interactions with plants, invertebrate animals, fish, and humans and I am a strong advocate of a comparative approach. My recent research has taken me into various aspects of marine microbiology, including microbes in coral health and disease and the effects of environmental stress on microbial community structure in corals and other marine invertebrates.
