Research interests

In addition to being generally interested in everything that relates to the structure and composition of the Earth's upper mantle, I am co-leading an Applied Mineralogy and Petrology research group that uses applies geochemical techniques such as automated scanning electron microscopy, trace element analysis and isotope analysis to solving real world problems such as improving the sustainability and efficiency of mineral exploration, mining and mineral processing.

Current research focus:
  • The melting history of the Earth's mantle through Os isotope analysis of detrital Os-bearing alloys from river and beach sediments (Os.Earth project, funded by an FP7 Career Integration Grant)
  • The formation of Rare Earth Element mineral deposits with the 'From Mantle to Ore' approach (PhD project of Christian Marien, funded by the Centre for Research in Earth Sciences)
  • Evaluation of the critical material (REE, PGE) potential of deep sea polymetallic nodules (PhD project of Wycliff Tupiti, research funded by UK Seabed Resources)
  • Application of automated mineralogy approaches to improving mining and mineral processing methods (e.g., collaborations with Grinding Solutions, Wolf Minerals)
  • Application of automated mineralogy to improve diamond exploration and diamond potential evaluation of kimberlites
  • Geochemical analysis of lamprophyres for regional mapping of the lithosphere in SW England
Past projects:
  • The chemical and (Osmium) isotopic composition of mantle pyroxenites and their origin (Pindos Ophiolite, Totalp Massif)
  • Magmatic and tectonic processes at oceanic spreading centres through the study of oceanic peridotites (Macquarie Island, Othris & Pindos Ophiolites, Oman Ophiolite, etc.)
  • Physical and chemical characteristics of melt transport through the oceanic mantle
  • The origin of ophiolites - supra-subduction zone vs. mid-ocean ridge ophiolites
  • The development of tectonite and mylonite (micro-) structures in mantle peridotites
  • Accretionary orogenesis with emphasis on the Altaids Orogen in western Mongolia (also Dariv Ophiolite)
  • The composition and petrogenesis of Eucrite and Diogenite achondrite meteorites: magmatic processes on 4Vesta as a proxy for the earliest magmatic history of Earth
