Research interests

I am a member of Primary Care within the Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

My main area of interest is clinical research into the scientific approach to acupuncture, including treatment of myofascial pain and osteoarthritis.

Most recently, I was Chief Investigator of ScrutiKnee, a pilot study of group acupuncture for moderate/severe knee pain. After successful completion of the pilot study, we are currently writing a report for publication.

I am also lead author on the Cochrane Review Acupuncture for smoking cessation.

I am also Editor in chief of Acupuncture in Medicine, the international peer-reviewed journal for Western medical acupuncture, published by BMJ Group.

Other research

Other areas of clinical interest include acupuncture as a treatment for menopausal hot flushes, and for withdrawal from cigarettes and other drugs of addiction.

I also undertake systematic reviews of acupuncture.
