How you will study the Tourism and Hospitality ResM

Your ResM with Plymouth University has three steps:

In the first stage you will learn critical research and evaluation skills with the academic team from Tourism & Hospitality and from Modern Languages if you have an element of French or Spanish in your research.

The second step lets you apply these skills alongside our specialists in hospitality, heritage, events, tourism, travel, cruise and French & Spanish. You will explore a case study from your chosen area to give deep understanding of an interpretation or development project.  This approach helps you recognise how leadership, creativity and discourses have changed a service or product.  We can ask, what can we learn from the heritage project to renew visitor access to Stonehenge in 2014?  How does it compare with the Alésia Museum Park in France?  What will Rio 2016 teach us about staging mega-events?  How are Plymouth and the English Riviera re-branding themselves for the 2020 Mayflower cruise influx?  How do major hotel chains, for example Accor, develop and then communicate segmented brands?  How has Spanish culture re-interpreted its monuments for the twenty-first century?

From a discourse point of view the case study examines how web materials, social media, press campaigns, photography and publishing have been used in the creation of destination image and in visitor expectations and their resulting practices.

The final Masters stage then is practice based.  During this phase you develop original written resources for your own or for your organisation's new project, acting as both content creative and as consultant. This role parallels the profession of consulting engineer in European terms, a role which is productive and also requires change leadership and project management capabilities.  The result will create the experience for the next generation of visitors.

An implementation plan, using your new knowledge from the case study module ensures your Research Masters project can be put into practice and evaluated throughout its lifespan. The production of digital artefacts may be appropriate to your project too.
