School of Tourism and Hospitality - Events Management
Through mega-events such as the Olympics to local festivals and art exhibitions, the events industry at all levels continues to grow. Our events management degree is designed to produce graduates with the skills to manage this fast-changing industry.

Our staff has expertise in the three drivers of the event industry’s growth: marketing hospitality and tourism, plus consultancy, as well as consultancy and project management.

Work readiness – the events management programme is designed to give students the intellectual, organisational, communication and practical event skills.

We encourage and facilitate students in gaining practical experience, both inside and outside the classroom.

Employer engagement and support – we encourage practitioners to engage with students through guest lecturers, assignment briefs and work experience. As a result of this students have been given real-life briefs to come up with creative and achievable event ideas at, for example, a nuclear bunker, a zoo and a charity.  In addition our students have been involved with consultancy based assignments that have delivered a real outcome such as Plymouth in Bloom, Furniss Biscuits and Wild Futures.

Enterprise opportunities – events is an industry where young people have the opportunity to develop their business idea.  In addition, to alumni who have created their own businesses in retail, sports and online events we also provide modules designed to encourage the inner entrepreneur.

Activities with students have included:
  • International field trips to Holland, France and the Czech republic which have addressed the experience economy, imagineering and destination management.
  • UK based field trips to Wales and Scotland have considered how venues, and the sports, entertainment, hospitality and tourism industries use events.
  • Plymouth hosts – twenty students as part of Plymouth Hosts provide a welcome to visitors at key entry points, such as busy parts of the city centre, the waterfront and during events in Plymouth.
  • Practical experience of delivering events for the university.
