From our Mathematics Teachers Day, a range of talks for schools, the Junior University for year 11, the Let Maths Take You Further day for year 12, to events run by our Centre for Teaching Mathematics and posters and leaflets for schools, please feel very welcome to contact us.
Mathematics teachers conference
Every year we run a free one day conference for mathematics teachers. We cover topics including:
- recent developments in mathematics education
- the many careers available to mathematics and statistics graduates
- sharing resources and ideas for enthusing pupils
- interesting and surprising applications of mathematics and statistics.
In 2016 the event will run on Monday 11 July and sessions will include:
- Margaret Harding (FMSP): "Changes to the new A-levels"
- Jade Chynoweth (BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Statistics graduate)
"My career in biostatistics since graduating from Plymouth"
- Dr Ted Graham (Plymouth): "Moving from GCSE kinematics to A-Level kinematics"
- Dr Antonio Rago (Plymouth): "The Mathematical Language of Supercomputers"
- Discussion: What support and CPD would be useful in light of changes to A-levels?
Speakers in recent years have included several of our own staff including Professor David McMullan on breaking World War 2 codes, Carol Knights from MEI, stand-up mathematician Matt Parker, Michael Borcherds from the GeoGebra Foundation, James Grime from the Enigma Project, Douglas Butler (Autograph), as well as many of our graduates now working in medical research, banking, pharmaceutical companies, ITV, the MoD and other industries.
Talks for schools
We offer a wide range of talks on mathematical and statistical topics to schools and colleges in our region. These include:
- why take A-level Mathematics?
- opening doors: careers with mathematics and statistics
and talks on topics ranging from the mathematics underlying internet security, dimensional analysis, the mathematics of bubbles and soap films and various talks on statistics.
This annual event is a week long exciting taster of mathematics at the University for year 11 students. In 2015 it will run from Monday 29 June to Friday 5 July. The entire week costs £25 and lunches are provided. It involves a variety of interactive sessions and projects working with lecturers and University students.
Let maths take you further
This one day event on our campus is designed for year 12 students taking A-level mathematics. It's jointly run with the Further Mathematics Support Programme. It consists of plenary talks and a series of workshops on mathematics, statistics, engineering and various sciences designed to give students insight into possible careers and degrees. The workshops are held by university staff from various departments as well as by speakers from professional bodies and industry.
This event will take place on Tuesday 23 June 2015.
