Janet, our Careers Adviser for BEd (Hons) Primary (all specialisms), says:
“As a general rule there are more jobs available for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT’s) in towns and cities than in rural areas. This is a very competitive field so it helps to be flexible in terms of location when looking for a teaching post, especially for your first job.
Some subjects at secondary level are also more in demand than others for example, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Modern Languages and ICT. Jobs in the primary sector are competitive and it is useful to look at opportunities that are not so obvious i.e. applying for jobs that are not advertised as NQT positions, or working part time in the first instance. Independent schools also welcome NQT’s, and the induction programme offered by these schools is recognised by the mainstream sector. Teaching is rapidly changing and it is essential to keep yourself informed and up-to-date! “

Relevant work experience

As a trainee teacher you will experience a range of teaching experiences on your programme and many Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT’s) find their first jobs in a school where they had a teaching placement, so make the most of your time in schools and if you like the school keep in touch and tell them you want to work there!
