Academics and businesses alike benefited from this event which provided an insight into the UK government’s Industrial Strategy.

Key representatives from funding bodies Innovate UK and HEFCE took us through the latest approaches to funding and investment.

Relevant case study presentations highlighted some of the critical factors for successful partnerships and there was plenty of opportunity for productive networking among participants and delegates throughout the day.

The afternoon presented a fascinating showcase of the breadth of the University's marine and maritime expertise through a number of elevator pitches from academics looking for partnerships.

There was an opportunity to visit some of the University’s facilities, including the COAST laboratory, the Robotics laboratory and the Immersive Vision Theatre.

Research projects for partnerships

This session was an amazing showcase of the breadth of maritime and marine-related research projects currently looking for partnerships.

The three minute elevator pitches appealed to a wide audience, from energy providers, coastal industries and harbour authorities, to local/environmental authorities, marine technology/biotech companies and entrepreneurs, to name a few. Further to the pitches, audience members had the opportunity to network with researchers.

  • Target audience: energy providers/distributors, environmental authorities
Dr Simon Ussher, Associate Professor of Marine and Analytical Chemistry
  • Pitch title: Assessing the impact of airborne marine emissions
  • Target audience: ferry and shipping companies, marine engine manufacturers and regulators, harbour authorities, coastal city councils, environmental authorities
Oliver Tills, Teaching and Research Associate
  • Pitch title: Embryo-phenomics: technological innovation for visualising temporal, spatial and functional diversity in developing embryos with unprecedented resolution
