The NIHR CLAHRC South West Peninsula (also known as PenCLAHRC) is the National Institute of Health Research's (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) for the South West Peninsula, and is a partnership between the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter and NHS organisations across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. It was first established in 2008 and is funded from the NIHR. PenCLAHRC is part of a national network of thirteen NIHR-funded CLAHRCs.
The primary aims of PenCLAHRC are:
- through research and educational activity, to further embed and fuel the partnership between the NHS and academia, building research capacity in applied health research and implementation
- to increase the partnership’s involvement in applied health research, to enable us to become a sustainable contributor to this field for the future
- to promote engagement and involvement in research that reflects real clinical and service user concerns, contributing to the creation of a research reception culture in the local NHS.
PenCLAHRC has three key objectives:
- to increase the volume and quality of patient-focused research in the South West
- to improve health outcomes by more effective use of evidence to drive health services
- to increase capacity within the health economy to use and generate evidence.
Our model of partnership working across the whole research and practice continuum aims to address both the much discussed research-into-practice gap and the equally important practice-into-research gap.
PenCLAHRC is represented in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry by Deputy Director Professor Richard Byng and a team of research fellows and support staff. Professor Byng is also a GP and Professor in Primary Care within the Centre for Clinical Trials and Population Studies.
PenCLAHRC currently conducts research grouped around five main research themes:
- Mental Health and Dementia
- Person-Centred Care
- Healthy People, Healthy Environments
- Diagnostics and Stratified Medicine
- Evidence for Policy and Practice.
