Periconception care refers to care before and in very early pregnancy.
Women with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly at risk of complications during pregnancy or in the postpartum period.
This project, undertaken by Heather Hopper for her PhD, is taking place amongst a group of women with pre-existing medical conditions.
It aims to explore what form of periconception care works for whom, how these approaches work and in what circumstances.
Heather is using realist methodology, which acknowledges that observations or experiences are often caused by processes that are not visible or observable but are none the less real.
This project will include two phases; firstly, a realist review and secondly, a realist evaluation, and both phases will be conducted in collaboration with a group of topic experts.
