Professor Peter Mitchell is chair of the ESRC grants assessment panel and will lead this workshop on submitting a project grant to ESRC. The focus is on helping researchers to submit stronger grant applications. The workshop will share insights from the ESRC process, including how to apply for a project grant, top tips to increase chances of success and common pitfalls to avoid. The session will also involve a practical element, including peer to peer feedback.


  • 30 mins: Overview of ESRC grant options, application process, top tips and common pitfalls
  • 60 mins: Practical session: working in small groups to develop ideas for applications and put in place learning
  • 30 mins: Focus on new investigators award
  • 15 mins: Plenary

This workshop is suitable for researchers at all stages of their career. There will be relevant discussion for those applying for new investigator grants, as well as those interested in the open research grant scheme. There will be a particular focus on the new investigator award – this section will be suitable for those interested in applying, as well as those mentoring more junior colleagues.

Lunch will be available before the workshop starts.
