Health and Decarbonisation
Climate Change is a growing health challenge both in the UK and globally. Extremes of heat were estimated to have resulted in 11,000 excess deaths across Europe during the summer of 2020 alone. Other projected impacts include the spread of diseases due to changes in vector ecology and increases in respiratory conditions.
However, as it accounts for almost 5% of net global carbon emissions, healthcare systems, like the NHS, can also play a key role in decarbonisation. Research is therefore needed not only to understand and adapt to the health impacts of climate change but also to help health and care systems from across the world to decarbonise.
