"I chose to study a degree in civil engineering after completing a diploma in my home country of Malaysia. Three UK universities offered me direct entry into the second year. I chose Plymouth for its location, study environment, facilities and the University’s rating in civil engineering. The lecturers were all also extremely friendly and helpful.
My course provided me with the knowledge I needed for my career. Before my final year I opted to do a year’s work placement working on a highway project for a Dorset engineering consultancy. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to experience the real civil engineering world before I graduated. As well as gaining useful practical experience it gave me a clearer future career plan.
As a graduate civil engineer for Jacobs Engineering, I am involved in project planning, structure design, liaising with various relevant organisations and site inspection. I am currently working on a railway bridge parapet maintenance scheme to replace existing safety barriers. The job also enables me to get involved in project management.
If you love working in a challenging world and don’t like to be stuck in the office all day, civil engineering is the career for you."
