FdSc Engineering (Automotive Engineering)

Bridgwater College and Somerset College recently merged to become Bridgwater & Taunton College. Study a specialist degree with us and be part of our growing community of over 28,000 students.     • FDEN1001 Engineering Science

      This module investigates a number of major scientific principles which underpin the design and operation of engineering systems. It is a broad-based module covering mechanical and electrical principles providing a basis for further study in the specialist area of engineering.

    • FDEN1003 Mathematics

      An introduction to fundamental mathematical techniques used in the analysis, modelling and solution of engineering problems. Application of methods will involve students in the use of algebra, trigonometry, statistics and calculus.

    • FDEN1004 Materials

      The module provides a basic background and understanding of the properties, selection, processes and use of materials.

    • FDEN1006 Power-Train Technology

      This module introduces students to the fundamental influences on engine design and operation.

    • FDEN1008 Automotive Industry Management and Organisation

      This module looks at the comparison of management theories and the function of the main areas and roles within the company. It also examines the main functions of the personnel department, together with the factors affecting motivation and satisfaction. Various types of organisation are considered together with their structures.

    • FDEN1009 Vehicle Electrical and Electronic Systems

      This unit provides students with background knowledge and understanding of vehicle electrical and electronic systems, circuits and components. It also develops their ability to test and find faults in these systems.

    • FDEN1012 Engineering Drawing and CAD

    • FDEN1013 Manufacturing Processes

      This module is to provide a broad and in-depth knowledge of a range of manufacturing processes and techniques that can be applied to a variety of materials for a variety of manufacturing applications.

    • FDEN2001 Instrumentation and Control

      The module provides an introduction to the classical elements of control and instrumentation.

    • FDEN2004 Engineering Design

      This module provides the students with an opportunity to experience the process of carrying out a design project. It will enable them to appreciate that design involves synthesising parameters which will effect the design solution.

    • FDEN2006 Vehicle Performance Engineering

    • FDEN2014 Fault Diagnosis and Repair

      This module enables students to develop an advanced level of vehicle engineering fault diagnosis, reasoning ability and practical skills, appropriate to industrial needs and to use them to complete vocational tasks successfully. It will enhance the student's ability to diagnose faults and select appropriate equipment from given data in a number of disciplines.

    • FDEN2002 Project

      This module develops students' ability to use the knowledge and skills they develop at work and/or on an engineering programme to complete a realistic work project. Students can work individually or together in teams so that they can co-ordinate their individual skills and abilities.

    • FDEN2021 Business and Finance

      This unit develops students' knowledge and understanding of the business and financial aspects affecting supervisors and managers in the service sector of the motor industry. It is a broad-based unit covering the main financial requirements of businesses and gives an overview of those aspects that are crucial to service management in the industry. It Also gives the students the opportunity to analyse the functions and structures of businesses and critically evaluate the commercial functions and communication.

    • FDEN2022 Advanced Vehicle Technology

      This module provides an introduction to the principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. The principles are taught in the context of applications relevant to the motor sport environment and include: the principle of fluid continuity, momentum and energy and fundamentals of thermodynamics.
