  • Year 1
  • In your first year, you will gain a solid grasp of tourism and hospitality operations. You will examine standards and service consistency in a range of areas, from food and drink operations, front office and managing facilities to marketing and business, enabling you to gain an insight into the various aspects of the tourism industry.

      The module examines a range of niche tourism products through the conceptualisation of special interest tourism.

    • HTM129 Introduction to Sustainable Hospitality Management

      This module develops a baseline understanding of the hospitality sector in the context of hospitality operations. It develops an understanding of sustainable management practice and considers these in the context of a range of hospitality operations. It includes an external learning element and provides a practical perspective to theoretical reading.

    • HTM139 Facilities and Resource Management

      This module provides the students with knowledge and understanding of issues relating to the management of facilities and resources within a tourism and hospitality context.

    • HTM140 Fundamentals of Tourism

      The module examines a range of niche tourism products through the conceptualisation of, and participation in, special interest tourism.

    • HTM141 Hospitality Operations

      "This module introduces the nature of tourism, setting an historical context to its development. It explains the nature and development of tourism. It discusses the patterns and characteristics of tourism supply and demand and the influential factors on them. It explores the structure, operation and organisation of the public and voluntary sectors and their activities. "

    • HTMP100 Career Investment Programme 1

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability. The stage 1 module provides students with an introduction to the Career Investment Programme, and develops their knowledge and understanding of employability, and the competencies they need to demonstrate when seeking graduate positions. The module encourages engagement in development activities offered by the university, and includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of filling gaps in their CV's and enhancing their employability.

      The importance of the environment for tourism is explored recognising the physical, social and economic impacts of tourism activity and sympathetic approaches to management. The forms of tourism, their associated markets, patterns, impacts and associated tourist behaviour are also explored.

    • HTM121 Food Safety for the Hospitality Industry

      This module introduces food safety understanding and provides a framework to ensure that hospitality products are made available safely and meet approved standards taking into account different hospitality environments and customers.

  • Year 2
  • Building on your growing knowledge, in your second year you will discover what it takes to plan, manage and run a tourism or hospitality business. You will work on modules based on hospitality, tourism and management, developing the skills you will need on the ground – from getting to grips with finances to dealing with staff, from the most junior member to the chief executive. You will also learn the methods and protocols required to collect, analyse and interpret data.

      This module provides the opportunity to critically evaluate foodservice events. Established foodservice management theory is presented in a series of lectures and then reflected upon in relation to operational environments.

    • HTM234 Contemporary Business Management for Hospitality Organisations

      This module develops students¿ management skills, and explores the theories, concepts and contemporary issues, relating to the key management functions of HR, marketing, and finance, in the specific context of the hospitality industry.

    • HTM238 Tourism, Hospitality and Events Research Methods

      This module investigates the potential contributions of different disciplines and approaches that help to explain the nature of tourism, hospitality and events management. The module examines the research methods used in investigations that focus on tourism, hospitality and events management as applied academic subjects.

    • HTM244 Business Development & Revenue Management

      This module provides the student with knowledge and understanding of issues relating to business development, performance measurement and revenue management in the tourism and hospitality industry.

    • HTMP202 Career Investment Programme 2

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability. The stage 2 module focuses on providing students with information on the placement year, and equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary for applying for placement and graduate positions. The module also includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of filling gaps in their CV's and enhancing their employability.

It enables them to build on the advanced language skills that they have already acquired and apply these to more specialised and complex situations (such as presentation and translation).

    • FREX700 French Advanced 4

      This module is normally taken by final year students of the foreign language who have completed an extended period of residence in the foreign country. It builds on their increased fluency and confidence, and their personal experience of the foreign culture, and enables them to develop the application of their skills in more sophisticated and demanding situations.

    • HTM233 Contemporary Food Concerns

      This module builds upon the knowledge gained from Level 4 module `Food Safety for the Hospitality Industry¿ and is also underpinned by `contemporary issues¿ related to the hospitality industry - including those affecting consumers, the environment and business. The module uses different methods of investigation for assignment work, through laboratory work, which allows for a good understanding of food, consumer requirements and safe delivery. Lectures, laboratory work, group work and visits provide varied environments for learning the topics of this module.

    • HTM242 Tourism, Human Resources and Competitive Advantage

      The module aims to raise awareness of and deepen students' understanding of the role of human resources in achieving competitive advantage in the tourism industry.

    • HTM245 Cruise Operations and Passenger Services

      The module is designed to develop the knowledge and skills acquired in stage one in the context of the cruise industry. Operational aspects of cruising combined with passenger services form the main focus. A programme of lectures, seminars and individual projects will help develop student learning in context.

  • Optional placement year
  • If you choose, you can take a work placement after your second year, gaining valuable hands-on experience working abroad and putting your knowledge and skills to use in a real world context. On a placement you will glean an insider’s insight into the industry, make useful contacts and position yourself to keep well informed about future work opportunities.     • HTMP300 Work Placement Year

      The placement year consists of an extended period of professional work experience in a relevant business organisation. It extends the student's commercial awareness and knowledge of the business environment, provides an opportunity for personal development, and equips them with the experience and skills necessary to gain suitable employment on graduation.

  • Final year
  • In your final year you will draw together the knowledge, understanding and skills gained from your studies so far and focus in on a particular topic to complete your final thesis. You will investigate the details of strategic and operational management challenges and choose a topic to add to your studies, such as food and service systems, intercultural communication or a language. If you are interested in a specific industry sector, there are options to customise modules for your chosen area.

    • HTM314 Honours Project

      The student integrates subject specific knowledge and skills to develop a specialist area of knowledge in depth and - with supervision from a subject specialist - conducts their own research investigation and reports their findings.

    • HTM325 Business Strategy for Tourism and Hospitality

      This module focuses on exploring and understanding a range of theoretical approaches to developing strategies for businesses in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

    • HTM335 Crime and Sustainable Tourism

      This module focuses on two contemporary tourism topics - crime and sustainable tourism. Included are the relationships between tourism and the environment and the principles, approaches and pitfalls to sustainable tourism management in an international context. The module also focuses on tourists and the tourism industry, and the relationships between these and crime.

    • HTMP301 Career Investment Programme 3

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability. The stage 3 module focuses on providing students with information on graduate options, including further study and graduate management schemes, and equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary for articulating and recording achievement and applying for graduate positions. The module also includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of filling gaps in their CV's and enhancing their employability.

      This module is designed to develop students¿ practical ability to communicate effectively in English in international situations, their understanding of intercultural communication and their ability to reflect on and develop their skills in using English.

    • ELC314 International Business Communication

      The module is designed to help students who have English as a second language to develop and refine their ability to communicate effectively in English in the global business environment encompassing different national cultures, business practices and systems. Students will engage in a range of written and oral tasks and assessments which will develop their business communication skills.

    • ELC315 Professional and Academic Communication

      This module is designed to help students to further develop and refine their ability to use English appropriately and effectively in professional and academic contexts at Year 3. They will do this by reviewing their language development by identifying an area of weakness and adopting appropriate strategies to make progress in that area; engaging in a small research project which they will present to the class; writing an essay and practising relevant professional and academic English skills in small class groups. This course requires consistent, steady work throughout the semester.

    • HTM311 Cruise Operations Continuity Planning

      The module considers the complex issues associated to managing change, evaluating risk and ensuring continuity for cruise operations. In order to achieve this, a critical appraisal of contemporary industry issues is undertaken. Thereafter, the module uses individual case study work centred on a cruise operation to enable students to apply their understanding of business continuity planning to a realistic problem.

    • HTM322 Managing Service Innovation

      An exploration of the many aspects that define service strategies for Hospitality Management. The module has a predominantly student centred approach to investigating and developing the issues that arise from seminar questions and enables options for individual choice and customised orientation.

    • HTM333 Hospitality Dynamics

      In this module you will explore and reflect on current concepts, trends, and issues in the hospitality industry and management. You will learn through lectures and seminars with subject specialists.

    • HTM337 Entrepreneurship

      You will develop a critical understanding of the theories and concepts of entrepreneurs. You will identify entrepreneurial opportunities in hospitality and tourism, and consider the role of innovation, creative thinking techniques and service development.

    • HTM339 Leadership

      "The module allows the student to explore the role of leadership within organisations, including both the practical and theoretical aspects of leadership, and how such concepts can change over time. Through an intensive field trip activity, it enables students to further explore and reflect upon leadership theory and concepts in practice. "

      This module is normally taken by final year students of the foreign language who have completed an extended period of residence in the foreign country. It builds on their increased fluency and confidence, and their personal experience of the foreign culture, and enables them to develop the application of their skills in more sophisticated and demanding situations.

Pass a named Access to HE Diploma in any subject with at least 33 credits at merit/distinction.

GCSE

All applicants must have GCSE mathematics and English at grade C or above.

Equivalent qualifications may be considered.
