The course

You will develop your knowledge of the world's fastest growing industry on a degree designed to empower you to innovate and inspire. You'll learn how to make effective and culturally-sensitive decisions to meet the changing demands of society and the economy - whether as the manager of a hotel, a resort, a conference centre or a cruise ship. 

You will have the opportunity to investigate international factors relevant to hospitality and develop the high quality business skills and ability to provide consumer satisfaction. You will have opportunities to apply learning in context and gain vital hospitality experience through engaging with industry based project work.

Our field work provides you with the opportunity to visit a variety of locations and recent trips have included Scotland, Majorca and France. We place an emphasis on language development to help you seek employment globally. 

You will gain valuable work experience in the UK or abroad as part of a year-long work placement programme - this includes working with a range of different styles of organisation from large corporations to small entrepreneurial companies across the world. This will give you the ability to develop your industry knowledge and management skills. It also allows you to network with industry personnel and build contacts for the future.

You can be confident you will be perceived positively because your learning is related to modern business practice - modules draw on the expertise of employers and maximise the use of field trips and visits. All hospitality and tourism degrees at Plymouth University place an emphasis on research which means you will be skilled at undertaking investigative projects.

As reflected in our recent National Student Survey (NSS) we will provide you with strong academic and pastoral support through a system of tutorials and seminars embedded within the undergraduate programme. Personal tutoring with sector experts and mentors will help you grow your potential and confidence.

Throughout the course you will develop transferable skills in problem solving, data presentation, communication, team work, negotiation, as well as specific talents such as expertise in revenue management, use of social media, emotional intelligence and contemporary food and beverage management.

You will  be equipped with the appropriate knowledge and understanding to move into contract catering (including event catering), hotels, leisure (such as theatres and casinos), licensed retail (pubs and clubs), restaurants and welfare catering. 

Recent graduates have gained their first time employment in junior management positions in a wide variety of organisations. Major employers such as Cunard, Hilton, Marriott and Sodexo have offered placements to students on our various hospitality management degrees which have led to future employment. Graduates have also gone on to set up their own businesses, work in consultancy, and become teachers and lecturers.

You can also further your career prospects by returning to Plymouth to complete a postgraduate qualification.
