Course details

  • Year 1
  • Your first year will give you a broad overview of the hospitality industry. You will improve your knowledge of business and develop an appreciation of the standards and service consistency needed for food and drink operations, front office, managing facilities and customer service. You will learn a new language or improve on an existing one, such as Spanish, French, German or Mandarin, and you will develop an understanding of culture and society in relation to your chosen language.

      This module provides the students with knowledge and understanding of issues relating to the management of facilities and resources within a tourism and hospitality context.

    • HTMP100 Career Investment Programme 1

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability. The stage 1 module provides students with an introduction to the Career Investment Programme, and develops their knowledge and understanding of employability, and the competencies they need to demonstrate when seeking graduate positions. The module encourages engagement in development activities offered by the university, and includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of filling gaps in their CV's and enhancing their employability.

    • HTM129 Introduction to Sustainable Hospitality Management

      This module develops a baseline understanding of the hospitality sector in the context of hospitality operations. It develops an understanding of sustainable management practice and considers these in the context of a range of hospitality operations. It includes an external learning element and provides a practical perspective to theoretical reading.

    • LCS101 Cross-Cultural Competence

      The rapid progress of globalisation makes the skills of international collaboration and cross-cultural competence essential attributes for future careers. The module develops these skills by introducing global theories of cultural difference and successful intercultural communication, and demonstrating their application in practical business / professional scenarios. Specific countries are also studied with particular focus, including presentations by guest experts.

      The module examines a range of niche tourism products through the conceptualisation of, and participation in, special interest tourism.

      "This module introduces the nature of tourism, setting an historical context to its development. It explains the nature and development of tourism. It discusses the patterns and characteristics of tourism supply and demand and the influential factors on them.   • In your second year, you will improve your management skills and discover how hospitality businesses are created and developed globally. You will become familiar with systems that support effective food and drink operations and facilities, and boost your language skills by taking part in cultural field work. Research methods will provide you with the skills to engage in both academic and business research, giving you an excellent base for placements that involve market research.

      This module provides the student with knowledge and understanding of issues relating to business development, performance measurement and revenue management in the tourism and hospitality industry.

    • HTM238 Tourism, Hospitality and Events Research Methods

      This module investigates the potential contributions of different disciplines and approaches that help to explain the nature of tourism, hospitality and events management. The module examines the research methods used in investigations that focus on tourism, hospitality and events management as applied academic subjects.

    • LCS200 Culture and Society 2

      This module examines a range of aspects which define Hispanic and Francophone worlds, focusing predominantly on the contemporary period. In addition, it develops a range of key skills which will support study at undergraduate level. For those students electing a languages Minor pathway, the module anchors linguistic competence through a deeper understanding of the cultural referents specific to these countries.

    • HTMP202 Career Investment Programme 2

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability. The stage 2 module focuses on providing students with information on the placement year, and equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary for applying for placement and graduate positions. The module also includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of filling gaps in their CV's and enhancing their employability.

    • HTM232 Food and Drink Management

      This module provides the opportunity to critically evaluate foodservice events. Established foodservice management theory is presented in a series of lectures and then reflected upon in relation to operational environments.

    • HTM234 Contemporary Business Management for Hospitality Organisations

      This module develops students¿ management skills, and explores the theories, concepts and contemporary issues, relating to the key management functions of HR, marketing, and finance, in the specific context of the hospitality industry.

  • Optional placement year
  • Expand your horizons, build your confidence and boost your skills with an optional paid work placement. You'll follow an agreed training programme under supervision and, on successful completion, will be awarded a Certificate of Industrial Experience. You can take placements in the UK or overseas across a wide range of sectors. Over 250 past graduates have taken placements and we strongly encourage you do so if you do not yet have significant industry experience.

    • HTMP300 Work Placement Year

      The placement year consists of an extended period of professional work experience in a relevant business organisation. It extends the student's commercial awareness and knowledge of the business environment, provides an opportunity for personal development, and equips them with the experience and skills necessary to gain suitable employment on graduation.

  • Final year
  • In your final year, you will further develop your knowledge and critical skills and undertake the honours project – this will provide you with an opportunity to investigate topics in greater detail through a management-style dissertation. You will study core modules including managing innovation, business strategy for tourism and hospitality, and culture and society. Our elective topics include languages, leadership and talent management, and contemporary issues in tourism.

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability.     • HTM314 Honours Project

      The student integrates subject specific knowledge and skills to develop a specialist area of knowledge in depth and - with supervision from a subject specialist - conducts their own research investigation and reports their findings.

    • HTM322 Managing Service Innovation

      An exploration of the many aspects that define service strategies for Hospitality Management. The module has a predominantly student centred approach to investigating and developing the issues that arise from seminar questions and enables options for individual choice and customised orientation.

    • LCS300 Culture and Society 3

      This module comprises a series of lectures on aspects relating to the French and Spanish speaking worlds, using sources (text, music, the media) in both the target language (for the benefit of Minor pathway students) and English. It requires independent research and analysis, with appropriate supervision.

      The module provides students with an opportunity to reflect on, critically appraise and develop a deep understanding of talent management in a hospitality context.       You will develop a critical understanding of the theories and concepts of entrepreneurs. You will identify entrepreneurial opportunities in hospitality and tourism, and consider the role of innovation, creative thinking techniques and service development.

      This module is designed to develop students¿ practical ability to communicate effectively in English in international situations, their understanding of intercultural communication and their ability to reflect on and develop their skills in using English.

Including a minimum of two A levels. Excluding general studies.

International Baccalaureate 

26 overall to include 4 at any subject at Higher Level.

All access courses

Pass a named Access to HE Diploma in any subject with at least 33 credits at merit/distinction.

GCSE

All applicants must have GCSE mathematics and English at grade C or above.

Equivalent qualifications may be considered.
