"After A levels I completed a 'Year in Industry' placement at South West Water in Exeter, working as a Control Room Technician, mainly doing web development. At the end of that year I took up a position as Energy Technician and was offered the opportunity to continue my academic development, studying for a two-year HNC in engineering and following this up with a one-year foundation degree in electrical engineering.
Successful completion of the foundation degree meant that I was able to progress to the final year of the BSc (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Systems* degree at University of Plymouth. For this I decided to take a one-year sabbatical from South West Water so that I could concentrate on the course full time. I graduated with a first class honours.
As a result of my success I received promotion at work where I am now an Energy Engineer, working as part of a team that manages South West Water's significant energy consumption and efficiency. I specifically deal with electricity meter installations, electricity supply contract management and maintenance aspects, including vibration monitoring of our various water and sewage pumps around the region and other mechanical machinery."
