Mathew Hodgett - student profile

"I am currently in my final year studying BSc (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering after returning from a year in industry. I chose this degree as, from a young age, I have had a keen interest in electronics and have always wondered how electrical equipment worked. The thing that I enjoy most, and which attracted me the most, was the amount of practical work on the course. This, for me, is very important as you are able to learn a lot more from actually building and testing a circuit than just learning the theory behind why it works. There is a good balance between theory and practical work, meaning that when you have a theory lecture you will most likely get a practical session to help get a better understanding of the theory previously learnt.

I undertook a year in industry with a company called Visteon Engineering Services Ltd. I was working as a Software and Subsystems Engineer in the company, which involved testing radio software, investigating defects in code, and general jobs within the software team.

The course has given me the opportunity to develop and improve a range of skills. It has helped with time management, team work and communication skills. I have also made many new friends and taken away many good experiences through my time here at the University.

The University itself is a great place to study; everyone is really friendly and the staff are more than happy to help you with any issues you may have during your time here."
