Katie Jones - graduate profile

"From making potions in my back garden after my granddad gave me an experiment kit, to working with global energy giants and pharmaceutical companies, my passion for chemistry keeps on growing.

After graduating with a first class honours degree and being on the Dean’s List for my subject each year, I am now studying towards a PhD alongside working as a Customer Support and Marketing Manager with spinout company PoreXpert Ltd, based at University of Plymouth, who specialise in analysing how liquids and gases behave in porous materials.

I had initially thought of going into teaching, after being made a science leader at school, and sharing this knowledge with other schools in the area and at science clubs in the holidays.  While I haven’t ruled it out completely, I am enjoying this new challenge. The added bonus is I get to keep my skills here in the South West as right from the start when it came to picking a university, I knew that I wanted to stay close to home.

I considered league tables and course content and delivery, but the open days were also very important in giving me an insight into what would become my second home.  It was the welcoming atmosphere and willingness of tutors to take time out to tell me more which attracted me to Plymouth.

When I tell people what I do I get the inevitable question ‘What’s it like to work in a male-dominated environment?’. If anything I’d say my colleagues have been more encouraging of my success."
