BA (Hons) Music - subject pathways

BA (Hons) Music is divided into five named awards: music, composition, performance, ethnomusicology, and technology; allowing you to choose and develop your own areas of particular interest.

BA (Hons) Music

Become a well-rounded musician. Participate in a rich diversity of modules and develop as a creative, reflective practitioner and researcher.

BA (Hons) Music: Composition

Develop your own distinctive musical voice. You will work with other practising composers and performers who will share their experience and working methods in critical discussion and analysis of a variety of musical works and compositional techniques. You will expand your portfolio through creative engagement and interaction in lectures, seminars and workshops.

BA (Hons) Music: Performance

Grow as an instrumental or vocal specialist with this strand’s focus on performance. Extend your range of playing styles, or stylistic variations. You will engage with musical performance both in theory and practice and deepen your understanding of what it means to be a performer.

BA (Hons) Music: Ethnomusicology

Get hands-on experience of music from a variety of other cultures (ethnomusicology) with practical workshops. Explore the work of key pioneers in this field and gain a deeper understanding of how music evolves within different cultural and societies. You will enhance your practical skills and experience, but also gain an awareness of methodologies/theories and key texts.

Explore one of the most exciting and rapidly-changing aspects of 21st Century music. Open your ears to possibilities you never knew existed and add highly technical skills to your employment portfolio. Blend your existing instrumental skills with technology, add electronics to your compositions, or extend your audio engineering skills beyond the norm.
