Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre

Through the partnership between Mount Batten and University of Plymouth many opportunities have been discovered, benefiting both our students and staff. Mount Batten offer a wide range of activities to take part in as well as offering their facilities to UPSU water sports clubs.

How to get there

Just a short distance from the University campus, Mount Batten can be reached three ways:

  • driving
  • bus
  • water ferry.

All forms of transport give you great views and take you across the water to Mount Batten. Driving to Mount Batten takes around 20 minutes and catching the number 2 bus will take 40 minutes. The water ferry is the fastest and easiest route, leaving from the Barbican every 30 minutes.

Student experience

Students from our Business School enjoy working on real projects for the centre, including:

  • identifying business opportunities within the centre
  • identifying external funding opportunities for the centre, researching energy saving options and recommending the most cost effective way forward.

Our own creative students saw the opportunity to create revenue from weddings, and Mount Batten now hosts more than 12 weddings a year.

UPSU Watersports Festival

On 13 May 2017 UPSU hosted a charity watersports day, run and held by the UPSU watersports clubs in partnership with the Mount Batten Watersports Centre. The clubs selected Derriford Children’s Cancer Service as their chosen charity, a charity that looks after children with cancer and leukaemia who live in Plymouth, West Devon and East Cornwall.

Students, staff and members of the public were able to have a go at six different watersports; sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, gig rowing, stand up paddle-boarding, yacht sailing and windsurfing. In total 137 people were able to get on the water and enjoy the sunshine, whilst raising £727.06

A big thanks to the watersports clubs for their helps with the event!

Plymouth Pasty sailing event

On the 12–13 November, 14 University teams competed in the Plymouth Pasty, a team racing event hosted by the University of Plymouth Sailing and Powerboat Club. Teams came from all over the South West and as far as London to attend the event's first year. 42 head-on head team races took place in the Cattewater, with each team racing six times. The top three results were: 1st Swansea Green, 2nd Cardiff 1 and 3rd Plymouth Placement.

Well done to the UPSU Sailing and Powerboat Club for organising and a massive thank you to the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre for hosting.

University of Plymouth staff sailing - a snapshot

"Thursday afternoons, a quick finish at work and onto the Barbican Water Taxi. At the Mount Batten Centre, old friends and new faces talk of wind and soon enough we are on the waterside fiddling with ropes and sails. We launch our brave wee vessels and fly away out onto the water. Lee Ho! We tack up the Cattewater, picking our way through the moorings and the expert racers, then on into the open water of the sound. Our little fleet reaches for freedom. Plymouth looks so pretty from the water. More experienced sailors guide newer members as we zig zag out and around Drake’s Island or towards the Breakwater. The sun sinks. Time ticks and always too soon sailing instructions are issued. We come about and set our sails to run for home. The Mount Batten Pier and Jennycliff slide by in the soft evening light. With boats put to bed, soon enough the thrills and spills of the day’s sail are being mocked, exaggerated and analysed in time-honored fashion. Eventually, with happily tired bodies it’s time for home."
