Advanced Composites Manufacturing Centre (ACMC)

What is the Advanced Composites Manufacturing Centre?

The Advanced Composites Manufacturing Centre (ACMC) is a leading composites facility based in the School of Engineering. Launched in 1987, we're constantly active across a wide range of projects, bridging the traditional gap between academic research and development and the needs of industry.

We work with large and small companies on projects including:

  • implementing new technology
  • improving processes
  • testing materials and components
  • solving manufacturing and materials problems.

"It's my view that the KTP we embarked on with Charlie and Plymouth University has been highly effective. We've not only got an innovative, market-leading product, but also a very detailed overall understanding of the market, which will be instrumental in the company's strategy for the development of other products within this sector during the coming years."

Ian Coates, Design and Engineering Director, Zoeftig

What are the benefits to you/your organisation?

Enhance your competitive advantage with services that can:

  • assess and optimise a manufacturing process
  • explore and produce innovative design
  • optimise product quality and performance
  • assist with cost and waste reduction.

Composite materials and structures have many and varied applications in engineering, including air, marine, road and rail transport; lightweight structures and conventional and renewable energy systems.

The Advanced Composites Manufacturing Centre has capability in:

  • hand lamination
  • vacuum bagging and autoclave cure
  • compression moulding
  • Resin Infusion under Flexible Tooling (RIFT)
  • Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM).

ACMC also has access to mechanical, rheological, chemical analysis and optical/ electron image acquisition and analysis.

Tap into the strengths of our highly professional team, who offer support in the operation of equipment, preparation of samples for design validation, and crucially in the interpretation of results, ensuring a swift turnaround. Access a wide range of academic expertise via excellent networks stretching across and beyond the University.

We can also work with you to deliver continuing professional development short courses (generally bespoke, but also for generic clients) and to undertake research, development, testing, forensics and other consultancies.

How does it work?

Contact us for an informal discussion about your requirements using the details below. We're happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement if you need us to,

How much will it cost?

Costing of work for commercial customers is determined on a case-by case basis. All costs assume full operator assistance and interpretation of the data generated. For generic short courses, a registration fee is declared when the event is announced.

Are you eligible?

If you think you could make use of our services, we'd be delighted to explore how we can help. Collaborative research and development has been funded by the European Commission, the Research Councils and the Technology Strategy Board.

ACMC has also been involved in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with:

  • Composites Integration (process equipment)
  • GKN (aerospace)
  • Plastech (process equipment)
  • Vortok (rail electrification)
  • Zoeftig (passenger terminal seating).

The Zoeftig project was awarded the Best KTP Partnership South West England 2010.
