Who can take part?

The competition is open to all University of Plymouth graduates and current students. University staff may enter provided they are also graduates of the University.

2019 competition outline

Each year the University produces a unique graduation gift for the graduating students who join our alumni community. This gift will be given away in our graduation marquee in September 2019. 

Over 25,000 people pass through the marquee during graduation week making this is a unique opportunity to showcase your talent.

This year’s brief is entitled: 'Plymouth Connection’.

This theme encourages alumni and students to consider how their time at Plymouth has influenced them, this could be by capturing a place in Plymouth which is special to you, illustrating a turning point in your studies, a moment which you felt has had a lasting impact on you or something entirely different.

What does Plymouth mean to you? Is it an opportunity, a springboard, the chance to follow your dream? Celebrate your time at University, the friends which you have made, the city and the alumni community that you are part of for life.

Design brief

The winning design will be featured on an eco-friendly travel cup.

Your design should be black and white only.

The best entries will demonstrate innovation and challenge expectations. Evidence of how studying at Plymouth has influenced you is essential. 

All submissions must be comprised of two A3 design sheets submitted electronically. Each sheet must communicate predominantly through visual language and can be supported by a maximum of 200 words per sheet.

The artwork for the cup should have 3mm bleed and trim marks and be a PDF file.

Your design must comply with University of Plymouth brand guidelines

The branding for the University can be included on the lid of the cup, as per the example below, and doesn’t have to be included in the artwork itself.

Initial ideas and design development

Sheet 1

This sheet should clearly show the progression of your design ideas. You may use a combination of annotated sketches, detailed drawings and photography to show your ideas. 

Final concept proposal

Sheet 2

This sheet must identify one final design concept which has clearly developed from sheet 1. Illustrate your concept through illustration, graphic image or painting. Annotate your work if needed. Convey, as best as you can, how your design solution or concept is a daring and original proposal for the design brief.

Submitting work

The submission deadline is 9am on Thursday 27 June 2019. Late entries will not be considered.

All entries must be submitted electronically to alumni@plymouth.ac.uk.

Entrants must include the following information on every page of their submission: Full name and year of graduation.

Entries to be saved as PDF, PowerPoint or JPEG files

The file should be saved in the following format: first name, last name.

Competition terms and conditions

1. By entering this competition, an entrant is indicating his/her agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.

2. The promoter of this competition is University of Plymouth, Drake Circus, Plymouth, Devon PL4 8AA (the “University”).

3. The title of the competition is “2019 graduation design competition”.

4. The competition is open to all University of Plymouth graduates and current students. University staff may enter provided they are also graduates of the University. The University may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the competition.

5. There is no entry fee and no purchase necessary to enter this competition.

6. To enter this competition you must submit your entry electronically to alumni@plymouth.ac.uk by 9am on Thursday 27 June 2019. Full details of submission requirements are included in the competition brief.

7. Only one entry will be accepted per person. Multiple entries from the same person will be disqualified. Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed. Competition entries cannot be returned

8. The competition will run from 9am on Friday 15 March 2019 to 9am on Thursday 27 June 2019 (the “closing date”). All competition entries must be received by the promoter by 9am on the closing date. After the closing date no further entries to the competition will be permitted and any such entries will be automatically disqualified.

9. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.

10. The promoter will not accept (a) responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed in transit, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of any postal failure, equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind; or (b) proof of posting or transmission as proof of receipt of entry to the competition.

11. The University of Plymouth reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of God or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other event outside of our control.

12. The prize is £250 in Amazon vouchers.

13. The prize is as stated and no cash or other alternatives will be offered. The prize is not transferable and not negotiable.

14. Winners will be chosen from all entries received. The competition entries will be judged by a panel of (three judges), one of whom is an independent third party who is not employed by the University. The judges will select the design which best meets the competition outline and brief set out on our website. Details of the judges are available on request by emailing: alumni@plymouth.ac.uk.

15. The winner will be notified by email by 31 July 2019.

16. The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into by the judges in relation to that decision.

17. By entering this competition you give your irrevocable, perpetual consent and licence for your design to be used by the University on our graduation gift and for marketing purposes.

18. You agree that the University may, but is not required to, make your entry available on its website and any other media, whether now known or invented in the future, and in connection with any publicity of the competition. You hereby grant the University a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence, for the full period of any intellectual property rights in the competition entry and any accompanying materials, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the competition entry and any accompanying materials for such purposes.

19. By entering this competition, you warrant that your entry is your own original work and does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party.

20. The winner agrees to the use of his/her name and image in any publicity material, as well as their entry. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.

21. The winner’s name will be available after 31 July 2019 by emailing the following address: alumni@plymouth.ac.uk.

22. The University shall have the right, at its sole discretion and at any time, to change or modify these terms and conditions, such change shall be effective immediately upon posting to this webpage.

23. The University also reserves the right to cancel the competition if circumstances arise outside of its control.

24. If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, the University may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.

25. The University reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.

26. These terms and conditions shall be governed by English law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
