Awards and scholarships

Every year our graduates and friends donate generously to provide awards, scholarships and bursaries for current students. Last year we raised over £80,000 so that you can make the most of your time studying with Plymouth University.

The income we raise covers a variety of priorities - from support for students experiencing financial difficulties, to funding that enables you to undertake once-in-a-lifetime extra-curricular activities, and travel or research expeditions.

Success story - Maria Thaller

It sounds cliché, but it truly was life-changing...it was such an enriching experience and I can’t wait to go abroad and do something similar again. I’m enormously grateful to the University for supporting me and making the trip possible.

Thanks to the Roland Levinsky Memorial Fund awards, Maria was able to fund a three month volunteering placement in Vietnam.

Bursaries, awards and scholarships funded by our graduates and friends

Student Hardship Fund

  • Donations are gratefully received to this fund, which helps ensure students can continue their studies in spite of financial difficulties.
  • Awards are made via a means-tested system, which the Student Funding Unit administers. In 2010, Plymouth graduate Helen Dean left a legacy of over £40,000, which is awarded through this fund.
  • The Financial Support Fund process identifies recipients of the money.

Reid Access Bursary

  • The Guildford Academic Associates made an endowment of over £80,000, which is used to provide an annual bursary for a student studying a science or technology discipline at Plymouth - with a preference for females who are the first in their family to attend University.
  • A new application process for this fund will be announced soon.

Dr Manning Award

  • Former lecturer Dr Margaret Manning generously donated £10,000, which is used to provide annual awards to a (preferably) female studying biological sciences. See the Dr Manning Award webpage for more details, and the application form.

Santander Universities Scholarships

  • The University's exciting partnership with Santander Universities provides a range of scholarships worth over £50,000 a year.
  • The scholarships offer numerous opportunities for international research collaborations and work-based learning in fellow Santander Universities institutions world-wide.

Roland Levinsky Memorial Fund Awards

  • The Roland Levinsky Memorial Fund offers current students the opportunity to enhance their University experience through extra-curricular activities.
  • Awards of up to £1,500 enable students to take part in activities which could include anything from participation in a sports club or society, to undertaking volunteer work overseas.

Sporting excellence scholarships

  • We work with experts in sports at our Students' Union to offer different levels of Sporting Excellence Scholarships to students aspiring to excel in a recognised sport, and already competing at a regional, national or international level.
