LGBT+ Inclusion Taskforce launched

As part of the University of Plymouth’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, an LGBT+ Inclusion Taskforce has been set up to champion all aspects of University life for both LGBT+ staff and students. The taskforce will follow Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index (WEI) to ensure process, policy and practice across the institution works for everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Led by the University’s Head of Student Services, Alice Ludgate, and the University Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Andrew Grace, the Taskforce includes membership from all Faculties and Departments across the institution. Over the coming twelve months, the Taskforce will devote time and resource to investigate LGBT+ inclusion in seven key areas:

  • Communication
  • Community Engagement
  • Employee Network Groups
  • Leadership
  • Policies and employee Lifecycle
  • Procurement and Estate
  • Student Journey
Each section has its own internal audit with associated action plans to address concerns and affect lasting cultural change at the University of Plymouth. The Taskforce is a natural progression from recent LGBT+ Inclusive practices including the University’s first Pride flag being permanently flown on campus, continued sponsorship of Pride in Plymouth and recent celebrations by the LGBT+ Staff Forum as part of National Day for Staff Networks.

Being a role model

Diversity is what makes the world such a vibrant and interesting place and I see the University of Plymouth as playing a pivotal role in both improving our own practice as well as being a role model for the region and sector.

Alice Ludgate is Head of Student Services, Senior Ally for the LGBT+ Staff Forum and Co-leader of the LGBT+ Inclusion Taskforce.

Interim findings will be presented by the Taskforce to the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee in February 2021 with a full report, inclusive of a two-year action plan, will be presented to the University Executive Group in August 2021.

More information on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Plymouth is available via dedicated webpages covering annual reports, training and latest news and events.
