This 40 credit masters-level module is suitable for all NMC registrants who wish to become teachers of nursing. It will prepare you to make a demonstrable contribution to education in practice and take a lead role in the development of educational practice within your practice setting, enabling you to apply contemporary issues in practice. The module will allow you to develop and apply advanced knowledge and critical awareness of teaching and learning in health and social care practice.

This is a core module for those wishing to gain an NMC recordable qualification as teacher and a core module for the MSc Contemporary Healthcare (Education) pathway.

Course details

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • demonstrate a deep understanding of methodological approaches and theory in complex learning situations in relation to your specialist area of educational practice, within ethical boundaries
  • critically engage in teaching in an inter-professional practice context
  • create, synthesise and evaluate knowledge in relation to educational practice
  • enhance your personal and professional development through reflection and engagement in educational practice.


The assessment for this module is in four parts:

  • a coursework based assessment
  • two practice based assessments (a review of teaching in practice and a portfolio of experiences)
  • a teaching log showing that you have completed the required number of hours of assessed teaching activity.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to undertake this module as part of a professional development pathway must:

  • be in possession of a health or social care qualification at degree level
  • have access to learners in order to meet the module outcomes

Individuals without a degree may be eligible to apply providing they have appropriate practice-related experience relevant to the programme, please discuss with the Professional Development Unit prior to application.
