Mental health assessment in urgent, emergency and acute care (degree and masters level)

Key features

This 20 credit module can be studied at degree or masters level and aims to increase your knowledge and skills engaging with individuals experiencing mental health problems in an urgent, emergency or acute care setting. 

You will build upon your knowledge of evidence-based mental health care, legislation, and national policies, in conjunction with developing the core skills to fulfil the process of assessment and risk assessment essential for safe management of person-centred multi-disciplinary care across the lifespan.

The module is delivered by an expert team and has input from a range of speakers, including from clinical practitioners from local trusts, as well as the regular teaching staff who run sessions and workshops on this module ensuring it is relevant and engaging. 

Most importantly those with ‘lived experience’ of mental health issues are part of the module delivery team and provide insights into ‘what helps’ when experiencing the distress of a psychological crisis.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge, understanding and awareness of concepts of mental health and mental illness, diagnostic category systems in mental health and a range of social, medical and psychological explanatory models
  • apply teamwork and collaborative practice to effectively communicate patients’ needs within the multi-disciplinary team
  • demonstrate knowledge, understanding and awareness of mental health assessment, risk management principles and tools to promote and support the provision of safe, effective and appropriate urgent and/or emergency mental health care
  • competently demonstrate the core skills required to engage, gather information, and build a therapeutic alliance with an individual experiencing mental health problems
  • critically evaluate the development and current practice of risk assessment in mental health
  • critically analyse and competently apply contemporary mental health legislation and national policies to mental health problems in urgent and emergency care.

Assessment

You'll be assessed making an initial assessment of a patient’s mental health and risk of harm and handing over to a colleague. You will also be required to complete coursework in the form of practice based learning activity.

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

  • critically analyse the range of evidence that informs mental health and mental illness including biopsychosocial, medical and psychological explanatory models
  • apply teamwork and collaborative practice to effectively communicate patients’ needs within the multi-disciplinary team
  • identify and develop work-based quality indicators for patients requiring mental health services
  • demonstrate critical awareness of ethical principles; including the diversity of service user experience and collaborative involvement in compassionate care delivery
  • provide an advanced critical analysis of and competently apply contemporary mental health legislation and national policies to mental health problems in urgent and emergency care.

Assessment

There are three parts to the assessment of this module:

1. A video recorded assessment.

2. A written reflection.

3. Practice based learning activity.

COVID-secure module delivery

The University is adhering to government guidance relating to COVID-secure operation. For this reason, modules are being delivered in a variety of formats, with much content delivered online, either in an interactive manner (i.e. requiring participation at the allotted times), or sometimes in a passive manner (i.e. you may be able to conduct some of the study outside of the typical taught hours of 09:00–17:00).

Some sessions, particularly clinical assessments, will continue to be delivered face-to-face with appropriate risk-mitigating measures in place. Others may allow you the option of attending face-to-face or synchronously engaging on-line with peers who attend face-to-face.

When you receive confirmation of your enrolment on a module, you will be granted access to our Digital Learning Environment (DLE or Moodle). You should access this prior to the start of your module to determine the teaching format of the module’s sessions.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to undertake this module as part of a professional development pathway must be:

  • on a professional register (i.e. NMC, HCPC)
  • practicing within urgent or emergency care to have the practice experience required to achieve the learning outcomes
  • to study the module at masters level you must also have previously studied to graduate level.
