Trauma, Loss and Recovery Centre
All of us will experience various forms of loss and traumas during our lives. These can be painful and distressing but are also a normal part of life. However in some circumstances these experiences are so overwhelming that we may need professional advice and support in order to help us to cope. The support required may vary but we adopt the view that an important focus is to empower people to draw upon, and enhance their own personal resilience and sources of support.
Purpose
The purpose of the centre is to provide training, advice and consultation to services and professionals who work with individuals, families and communities. This would include the following:
- Training - workshops, training programmes, seminars and distance teaching materials for professionals (including social workers, psychiatrists, mental health workers, psychiatric nurses, clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists, family therapists, foster care and adoption agencies and carers, youth offending workers and bereavement services) in a range of related topics:
- Loss, Trauma and Resilience
- Patterns of unresolved trauma and loss
- Post-traumatic stress symptoms
- Attachment Theory
- Assessment of attachments (Child, Adolescent and Adult measures including course available on the AAI and Story Stem approaches)
- Fostering community support networks
- Treatment and intervention, including family therapy, CBT, attachment therapy
- Research - To secure research funding in order to develop national and international excellence in knowledge and interventions regarding trauma and loss.
- Provide assessment to services and professionals regarding people’s experiences of loss and trauma.
- Provide consultation to services and professionals working with individuals, families, and services regarding potentially helpful forms of support and treatment.
- Disseminate information to public and to professional mental health systems. This is by means of Web based links, information, leaflets and open-days.
