Zoë James is Lecturer in Criminal Justice Studies and Programme Manager of the Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies undergraduate degree programmes.
Qualifications & background
Zoë James completed her BSc (Hons) in Applied Sociology at the University of Surrey. She then went on to work for the Home Office Research Unit carrying out a range of research projects in the area of crime and criminal justice. The key projects she worked on over three years looked at entrance into the criminal justice system, focusing on police process and procedures and an evaluation of the public order provisions of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. Her work on the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 was then developed through PhD study at the University of Surrey where Zoë gained a studentship. Zoë's PhD specifically focused on the policing of New Travellers in late modernity. Zoë joined the Criminal Justice team at Plymouth in 1999.

Teaching interests
Zoë James teaches at each stage of the Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies Degree programme at Plymouth, including the modules: Criminology (Stage 1), Policing (Stage 2) and Organised Deviance: Cultures of Resistance (Stage 3). She also teaches on the MSc Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies on Doing Criminology: Theory, Policy and Practice. Zoë supervises a number of PhD students who are exploring issues in criminology.

Policing diversity; public order policing; controlling Gypsies and Travellers; organized deviance.
