Role
As Head of Work Based and Placement Learning, I have a university-wide remit, working with all faculties and directorates in a collegiate manner not only to promote my area of responsibility but to promote the professional development of staff in order to enhance the student experience.

As part of my remit, I am the University lead on accredited CPD and the flexible CPD degree programme at Bachelors and Masters levels. An increasing number of non-traditional learners, especially those in the workplace, want to access higher education in non-traditional ways such as by distance learning. This presents universities, which are geared more towards face-to-face lecture provision, an enormous challenge which we are starting to address through innovative approaches involving e-learning and producing open educational resources (OERs) for CPD.

E-learning forms a significant theme throughout my work as it serves as an invaluable tool that supports my academic teaching, enables my work-based learning activities and enhances student learning and assessment, both traditional and distance. I not only use e-learning extensively but develop new e-learning approaches. I have a track record of pioneering e-learning methods such as web-tutorials, audio and video feedback, e-portfolio development, OERs for CPD and mobile app tutorials.

I am currently Project Director of a Higher Education Academy/JISC-funded project producing open education resources (OERs), mainly e-learning materials to support traditional (ie full time) and non-traditional (ie distance learners in the workplace) learners. The project draws in expertise from across the University to produce resources that are shared with colleagues across the higher education sector, nationally and internationally. Working across the university gives me the opportunity to support and work alongside colleagues from numerous disciplines and contexts as well as serving as a conduit for disseminating best practice. Much of my recent work has focused on skills related to the IT Sector.

I obtained a National Teaching Fellowship in 2003 in recognition of my innovations in teaching and learning and won first place in a national e-learning competition in 2006.

My own discipline subject is neuroscience and my research has included: axonal regeneration, the cellular effects of neurotoxins and my current work is on the neural control of the human standing posture.

Research interests

I have three main academic research areas: neuroscience, work-based learning and e-learning. At first glance, these may seem as three disparate areas but they are very much linked in my practice. I originally trained as a neuroscience researcher at prestigious universities such as King's College London, The Institute of Neurology (University of London), The Royal Free Hospital Medical School and the University of Lund, Sweden.

I wanted to share my passion for neuroscience with students which led me into academia as a lecturer. As a reflective practitioner, I continually seek to improve my abilities to teach which in turn led me into pedagogic research as I always thought there were better ways for students to learn. I consider myself as a pioneer and I never fear trying a new approach. My initial training as a neuroscientist gave me a scientific and research-informed approach which I apply to pedagogy so whenever I try something new I always have an evaluation plan in place to assess the new development.

Having come from a practice background, I have always been aware of the importance of the interplay between theory and practice and when I was Placements Tutor, I realised that the learning that occurs in practice and the workplace is often more powerful and effective than learning in a formal educational setting. The researcher in me wanted to explore the factors that make the workplace as credible a learning environment as the lecture theatre. My interest in work-based learning grew as I developed ways that allowed students to recognise and maximise their learning on work placement and relate it to their studies at university. Working with students on placement introduced me to employees who wish to access higher education for their own career advancement and for graduate workforce development and I have been seeking ways to deliver learning to this often neglected group of learners.

Overarching both these areas of neuroscience and work-based learning is my work in e-learning. My work in e-learning started in the early days of the internet when it was mainly used to disseminate scientific information. I recognised the internet's potential for enhancing education early on and I was one of the first academics in my then university to develop web-tutorials to support student learning of lecture materials and worked with a colleague to develop content for the university's first virtual learning environment. In the early days there was much antipathy to using e-learning materials on behalf of both students and staff. Instead of putting me off, I wanted to explore the reasons for these attitudes so I could make sense of them and address them.

Attitudes have moved on since these early days and e-learning is more widely accepted amongst students and staff though there is still a long way to go. I use e-learning methods, many of which I have developed myself or with colleagues, to assist with teaching my specialist subject area, with enhancing work-based learning and outreaching to non-traditional learners. I feel that many of the principles that apply in my context are generic and can be applied on a wider basis.

Working on a university-wide level allows me to explore and support numerous disciplines and contexts outside my own specialities as many of the challenges and joys of being an academic are common amongst us. Universities are very much organised along discipline-based structures which can constrain inter-disciplinary cooperation.
