Role
I am a Lecturer in Sustainable Design at the University of Plymouth. My research interests are investigating the relationship between Architecture and environmental performance and individual buildings with the wider urban system.
I am a member of the Architecture department in the School of Architecture Design and Environment.
I have a background in industry and government. In government I worked at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Envirionment (CABE) where I was responsible for large scale issues of sustainable placemaking and managed a programme of support with the 8 core cities in the UK advising them on adaptation and mitigation strategies on large regeneration projects.
I am a registered Architect with over 10 years experience and have worked for internationally recognised Architecture and urban design practices. I was responsible for the design of a number of award winning projects ranging in scale from large masterplanning projects to individual houses. I have experience working in low energy housing with a focus on reducing the performance gap between design and completion.

Selected completed projects:
Derwenthorpe Prototype Housing
Client: Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust
Architect: Simon Bradbury at Richards Partington Architects
2 Prototype houses designed to examine how to reduce the gap between predicted and in use energy performance as well as a range of other new technologies. Post-completion monitoring by Leeds Metropolitan University shows a significant narrowing of the performance gap between predicted and actual energy use. Each house also trials an alternative 'Modern Method of Construction'.
Awards: CBSE Building Performance Awards 2011 (shortlist), RICS Awards 2011 - sustainability (shortlist), Sustinability Awards 2010 - sustainable housing of the Year (shortlist)
See associated research on this project 'Redefining the prototype: evaluating the design process to reduce the performance gap in new housing'.
Derwenthorpe Phase 1
Client: Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust
Architect: Simon Bradbury at Richards Partington Architects
64 new houses as part of a new 540 home sustainable urban extension to York which will include a range innovative of technologies and managment arrangements designed to support a truly inclusive and sustainable new community. For further information see www.jrht.org.uk/communities/derwenthorpe .
