Biography

Biography

Ryan recently completed his Doctoral thesis investigating how audiences psychologically respond to experimental music theatre performance. Ryan is a composer and orchestrator and has recently written clarinet music for the Ten Wee Devon Pints (2023) project. Ryan is a keen educator and currently holds an Associate Lecturer position at the university.

Research

Research

Research interests

Music Theatre, Opera, Intermediality, Experimental Music, Immersive Theatre, Chamber Opera, Sound Art. Ryan's current research is investigating, though social science experiments, how audiences respond to music theatre and its varying aesthetics which trigger emotional reactions such as pain, discomfort, strong empathy, happiness, laughter, and guilt.
