My research activities are underpinned by my interest and expertise in Analytical Chemistry. My research programme is at the interface of Analytical Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry as Head of the Biogeochemistry and Environmental Analytical Chemistry (BEACh) Group at the University of Plymouth and a member of the Biogeochemistry research Centre. Particular areas of current interest are the development of field based and laboratory techniques for the determination of macronutrients (e.g. P, N species) and micronutrients (e.g. Fe species) in natural waters and their role in terrestrial, freshwater and marine biogeochemical processes. The technique of flow injection (FI) analysis provides an integrating theme for my research activities, with particular emphasis on the design, construction and deployment of automated FI instrumentation for laboratory and in situ applications. The principle objectives are to: · Monitor environmental processes by shipboard, bankside or submersible deployments in order to provide immediate, high quality analytical information with good temporal and spatial resolution on specific analytes of environmental interest. · Use this high quality data as a means of better understanding environmental processes, elucidating the biogeochemical cycling of nutrient elements, providing a database of environmental trends and detecting transient events such as pollution incidents. · Interact with other disciplines in order to provide decision support systems for environmental / water quality management.
