Biography

Biography

My area of speciality is Primary Care. I worked in clinical practice for almost 25 years in a number of GP practices and stopped working clinically in 2016. I now work part time on the undergraduate programme.

Qualifications

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1985 having completed my training in RCH Treliske.
I went on to train as a midwife at Hope Hospital in Salford but on qualification decided that I actually wanted to study for a degree and applied to study History at Manchester University, graduating in July 1992. I loved every minute of my 3 years at University but realised that I missed seeing patients and so started my career as a Practice Nurse.
After a couple of years I decided to do a Masters degree completing an MA in Health Care Ethics and Law In 1999. I dont think a day has gone by when I havnt applied the skills and knowledge acquired on that course & I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to study in the Bioethics department at Manchester University.
In 2005 I commenced a new Masters programme run by Bolton University to become an Advanced Practitioner. I also undertook my Nurse Independent & Supplementary Prescribing course in 2006 and qualified as an Advanced Practitioner in Primary Care in April 2007. From then until October 2013 I worked full time in a GP surgery in Salford. As a social enterprise the company I worked for was a 'not for profit' organisation with quite an alternative approach to providing Primary Care in comparison to traditional 'partner led' models.

I commenced my post at Plymouth University in October 2013 - an innovative collaborative role combining academic and clinical practice. In January 2016 I made the decision to move into full time education so I could focus all my efforts on the academic aspect of my role. In May 2017 I decided to work part time.
I have loved the privilege of working in Primary Care and am passionate about promoting its benefits to a new generation of nurses.

Teaching interests

My teaching interests are based firmly in the community but especially in Primary Care.

As a Practice Nurse I focused on health promotion and long term condition management but as an Advanced Practitioner in Primary Care I broadened my scope to that of a generalist and I like to think that my scope will remain broad in focus. Although I now no longer work regularly in clinical practice I am keen to promote the extended role of
the Advanced Practitioner because of its immense potential.
Having had the privilege of studying for a Masters in Health Care Ethics and Law and the experience of how invaluable the skills are in clinical practice I am keen to share this knowledge with students.
The modules I am currently teaching on relate to Public Health/Health Promotion (Level 5), Assessment and Planning (Level 4) and nursing in Primary and Community Care (Level 6).
I have also supervised students undertaking the substantive project as part of their masters in Advanced Practice.
As part of my overall teaching role I also aim to whet the appetites of pre-registration nurses to follow their future careers in the community.
I had commenced an Education Doctorate programme in January 2020 but unfortunately when the impact of covid became clear I interrupted in March 2020 and finally withdrew in September 2020.
