Role
Author of the inter-active book, THE SUSTAINABLE SELF (published by Earthscan in 2011) Information on the book and the online resources that support it can be found at:

www.earthscan.co.uk/self

Paul lectures on two MScs in Sustainable Construction (Project Management and Cost Management) and the University's undergraduate Environmental Building Degrees (BScs in Building Surveying and the Environment, Construction Management and the Environment and Environmental Construction Surveying) Paul provides consultancy and values-based training services across the UK to educational institutions and other public and private sector establishments who wish to focus on sustainability education and personal/ organisational engagement with sustainability. As the former Head of Building Programmes, Paul helped conceive the UK's first overtly environment-themed building undergraduate degrees in the UK in the mid 1990s. He was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2004 by the Higher Education Academy for his contribution to teaching excellence and won a national GREEN GOWN award for the university in 2007 for the environmental content of the construction degree programmes at Plymouth. Between 2000 and 2005 Paul was the Director of the SLICE project (Student-centred Learning in Construction Education), which transferred excellence in flexible learning to over 40 other institutions and was described by the Higher Educartion Academy as, "One of the best (projects)" in the FDTL4 funding round. Paul currently was the Environmental Building subject leaderin 2010/2011 and is an Associate Professor in sustainable construction education and sustainability, providing specific input on the development of teaching and learning innovations for students and lecturing colleagues.

In 2005 Paul became a founding Fellow of the Centre for Sustainable Futures, a government-funded £4.5 million centre of excellence for teaching and learning. The focus of the centre is to make the University of Plymouth an international role model for education for sustainable development. Paul's role will be to enhance and extend the excellent teaching practices undertaken by him and his colleagues within the Environmental Building group.

Paul's most recent work has focused on engaging individuals at a personal level with sustainability. He has pioneered new values-based sustainability training techniques that have been undertaken by over 600 individuals, including students, academics, government officers and businesses. This work has been translated into Paul's book The Sustainable Self.

Paul's sustainable training events are a core element of the university's built environment degrees, following pilots in 2007, which resulted in unaminous endorsement  by all participating students. Since then, the training has been undertaken by nearly 700 academics, industry professionals and government officers as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. The training is now in demand for staff development internally at Plymouth and at other institutions.

Qualifications & background

Paul is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and is a 2004 National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Paul spent 13 years in professional practice as a building surveyor in the UK and overseas. He arrived at the university in 1992 with a brief to develop a new suite of construction and surveying degrees, which were first designed and validated in 1995. He leads the university's activities with the accrediting body - the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Professional membership
Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

Fellow of the Centre for Sustainable Futures 2005-2010

Teaching interests

Paul teaches in three areas:

Core building Surveying - survey methods, building pathology, defect diagnosis, professional services

Sustainability - values, beliefs and behaviour, personalising sustainability, sustainability knowledge and skills for professional practice

Sustainable construction - sustainability issues, environmental impact assessment of buildings, contaminated land, specifying and managing safe and sustainable buildings

Research interests

Paul's research interests are both technical and academic.

Paul's current research is the evaluation of values-centred sustainbility training pedagogies across three disciplines; Design, Enginering and Finance/accountancy. The research involves the collation of pre and post training data on around 140 undergraduate participants to exp-lore potential shifts in  values orientations and worldviews arising as a reslt of the training intervention. The project is expected to be completed by Autumn 2011.

On the technical front he has contributed to environmental related research on energy afficiency and radon gas, and has published on the health and safety of timber preservatives.

Academically, Paul has been highly active in developing high quality teaching and learning resources for use by academics both at Plymouth and nationally. Between 2001 and 2005 Paul led the pioneering "Student-centred Learning in Construction Education" project, with total funding of £325K. This project aimed to enhance the quality of student learning on building and civil engineering programmes nationally by building on Plymouth's experiences in developing excellent teaching and learning activities for students. Through the project Paul and his team developed a wide range of flexible learning materials which lecturers are now utlising on a national basis which have been extremely well received by students and lecturers alike.

Since 2005, Paul has focused his energy on developing new techniques for engaging individuals at a personal level with sustainability. He has published this work widely through refereed journal and conference papers, providing international conference workshops and delivering bespoke training to organisations, academics and students across the UK.

Paul has over 20 publications.
