          Research interests

Peter Matthews' research interests are currently concerned with fluid flow in porous materials, particularly when this has environmental importance. His research group currently comprises 3 PhD students and a post-doctoral fellow, and he has previously supervised 17 PhDs to successful and timely completion (14 as P.I.). He has attracted over £2m of research funding to date, the majority of which is from research councils (BBSRC, NERC and EPSRC). He has had 98 refereed works published to date and 33 consultancy reports, including a 500-page textbook on Experimental Physical Chemistry (Oxford University Press).  For January to April 2007 he was Royal Society visiting associate professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics, Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Australian National University, Canberra.

His current research effort has centred on the development and application of Pore-Cor Research Suite (Pore-Cor = Pore fluids properties Correlator). This unique, world-leading software has been used in 40 countries worldwide to

          • optimise porous materials to improve properties for applications such as oil recovery, paper coating, catalysis, impregnation, sinter strength and soil structure,
          • get more information from mercury porosimetry and water retention experiments, and
          • view pore-fluid behaviour in a virtual reality environment.

The software generates a model of the behaviour of fluids within porous media at a scale of a few pores to a few thousand pores. Different behaviours of the fluids, such as percolation, permeability and flow in the presence of colloids, are correlated by use of a common void structure, based on percolation characteristics measured by mercury porosimetry.

Four research projects are currently under way:

          • Understanding Soil Quality and Resilience: Effects of Perturbations and Natural Variations on Nitrous Oxide Emission, Water Retention and Structure. P.I. of a £1.1m project funded by the BBSRC Agri-Food committee. With D Scholefield (IGER), RWhalley (Rothamsted Research), N. Bird (Rothamsted Research) and I. Young (SIMBIOS, Unversity of Abertay).  Also includes funding for postdoctoral fellows including G.M.Laudone and D.Holtham.

          Other academic activities
          Consultancy

The Environmental and Fluid Modelling Group laboratories, located in Davy Building 601 and 602, provide consultancy services for the characterisation of porous solids.

Equipment includes a mercury porosimeter, surface area analyser, helium and powder/envelope pycnometry, porometer and half-metre scale automated lysimeter.

The laboratory achieved full ISO 9001:2008 accreditation in August 2010, and all mercury porosimetry work is already done according to strict protocols which exceed those required by the instrument manufacturer.

          Additional information

Peter Matthews takes a paternal delight in the achievements of his family, one of whom is featured at www.pore-cor.com/group.htm , and another at http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/news/stories/2010/inspire_competition/ .
With his wife Diane as main carer, Peter has extensive experience in the rehabilitation of babies and children following abuse, neglect or abandonment.  The efforts of Peter and his wife were recognised in a prize and citation presented by Pirate FM, on behalf of Cornwall County Council Children's Services, at a celebration evening in Newquay in October 2008.

Peter is also a first bass, and choral scholarships coordinator, of the East Cornwall Bach Choir.

He is a keen photographer, with several photos published by local media, and has raised beef and dairy cattle, sheep and ponies in his SPS registered 0.9 hectare field.
