Teaching interests

Publishing was originally a regional vocational College Diploma inPublishing and Book Production. Since taking over the subject leadership in1986 a series of revalidations have made the course a named Masters award, andfor a long period of time the only MA course within the Exeter campus, Facultyof Arts. The course enjoys a reputation with undergraduates from the United Kingdomand the European Community from France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain andFinland. It regularly attracts international students, including people in publicsector or government posts within their own country. This has included studentsfrom St. Lucia, Belize, Malaysia, America, Canada, China, Mexico, Venezuela andBrazil. Two MA submissions have gone on to win and become runner up in the SueThomson Foundation National Publishing Awards hosted by Book House, which wasestablished by the Publishers Association as the official industry trainingprovider.

Key to the course is work based and placement delivery withinthe structure. Work based learning was originally situated within a developingpublishing company (Intellect) who were invited into the University to share anoffice alongside the course. This enabled both student and company to sharegrowth experiences and operational contexts of a small business. Work placementallowed the student to research a publisher of their choice outside of theUniversity, to provide contrast and also potential career route. The developingpublishing company has now grown into a medium size business with offices inBristol. This work based experience company has now been replaced with theUniversity of Plymouth Press making the level of engagement beneficial on morelevels to the student. With UPP truly looking after the academic needs of thestudent, students now undertake enterprise at a deep level with a range ofoutside practitioners from the industry including authors, artist, editors, marketers, fundraisers and so on. This hands on learning model is innovatorywithin Publishing education in Britain. (Several courses produce newspapers ormagazines, but there are no similar examples of University presses directlysupporting learning and teaching objectives at Masters level).

Grants & contracts

UPPs initial bid for this contract was against 30 otherorganisations; the unique selling point was to include 20 contemporary Romanianartists together with the 20 texts in translation. Through partnership withPeninsula Arts the launch event of the series has been developed into aRomanian Festival (November 2009) which supports Romania’s cultural message andfight against cultural stereotyping. Having won the contract I made a trip toBucharest in May 2009 to finalise details for the promotion of the series andby extension UPP/UoP. Further developments resulted: first, subsequent to thebook launch and related exhibition (hosted by Peninsula Arts), in January 2010further launch events will take place at the Romanian Cultural Institute inLondon, Belgrade Square. Second, a further funded contract is under negotiationfor a major project to publish Romania’s leading contemporary artists. Incometo the University in support of this project to date is £120,000, to bereleased from Autumn 2009 over a 5 year period, on publication of titles intranslation. The second successful RCI publishing project bid value is £180,000..

Other recent collaborations that have successfully attractedfunds are from Asian Arts which promotes diversity and equality, have beendeveloped with the local Chinese community and Plymouth Racial Equality. Thisallowed Mandarin speaking publishing students to produce a bilingualpublication in support of the local Chinese community in the South West. Apartnership between the University and the City Museum and Library for jointpublishing projects; the first, which is under contract, is the South West involvementin the Slave Trade, Human Cargo. Thistogether with another African/Caribbean proposal from Racial Equality buildsanother list of UPP publications.
