Teaching interests

I teach on all three years of both the European Studies and Geography undergraduate degree courses as well as on two Masters Programmes. I also supervise doctoral students. My contributions focus on the processes of European integration. While concentrating on geographical and policy dimensions of this unification process, I develop an interdisciplinary approach IN teaching students from a variety of disciplinary and national backgrounds. Within the ERASMUS staff-exchange scheme, I also teach each year in continental European universities, especially at the Université de Toulouse in France.

Research interests

My research interests and publications have been varied but they focus on questions related to geographical dimensions of European integration. My doctoral thesis analysed the policy-making processes producing the original Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) of the European Union. This interest later led to a major book and several articles on the CFP. I have also co-authored a book entitled `From Single Market to Social Europe’ and published research on European regional policy, transnational regions within the EU, the EU as a global trading partner and French attitudes to European integration. As a fluent French speaker, I am presently focusing my research effort on the political-geographical dimensions of language policy within the EU. In particular, I am examining the problems of promoting the EU principle of respect for linguistic diversity in a Europe where English has become the increasingly dominant language of communication in most international domains.
