Biography

Biography

Dr Rizvi is a Lecturer in Marine Technology at University of Plymouth. He is a Naval Architect with expertise on ship design, ship structure, ship decommissioning, ship recycling, ship stability and ship hydrodynamics. He has extensive research experiences on marine vessels and marine structures covering wide range of topics including fatigue, failure and integrity. Dr Rizvi has experiences working in various industry-academia collaborative research projects. He has authored and co-authored more than fifty (50) peer-reviewed international journal and conference articles. He is an editorial board member of Journal of Marine Science and Engineering and an Associate Editor of Ships and Offshore Structures Journal. Dr Rizvi also serves as a reviewer for several journals, UG and PG programme reviewer, PhD thesis examiner, technical committee member of international conferences and grant application assessor. He is currently serving as a Guest Editor for a Special Issue in MDPI Journal on the theme "Frontiers in Ship and Offshore Structures".
Dr Rizvi is actively engaged with research projects and supervises PhD students. His current research focuses on ship structural behaviour under static and dynamic loads, ship recycling, clean propulsion systems and subsea pipes.
In his current role, he is responsible for teaching Ship Stability, Hull Resistance, Ship Propulsion, Ship Design and Ship Structure along with Maxsurf Software Packages. Apart from teaching and research, he is also responsible for Personal Tutoring, Stage-1 Tutoring and Placement Tutoring. Dr Rizvi is currently the Apprenticeship Programme Lead and the BEng/MEng (Mechanical/Marine) Programme Manager in the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.

Dr Rizvi's teaching interests include a wide variety of subjects, for example, Naval Architecture, Ship Stability, Resistance and Propulsion, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Advanced Materials, Failure Mechanism & Fracture Mechanics, Heat Transfer, etc.

Research

Research interests

Dr Rizvi has an extensive and broad research background. Prior to joining the University of Plymouth, he has worked for 2 years as a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham (UK). Dr Rizvi has received his PhD from the University of Greenwich where he also has worked as a post-doctoral Research Fellow for around 3 years. He began building his research career in 2003 through working as a Research Assistant at the City University of Hong Kong (China) and he has worked in the areas of reliability and failure analysis of micro-joints under thermo-mechanical loading, numerical modelling of diffusion induced failures, thermal management solutions of power converters, dynamic behavioural analysis of compressed-air and thermal energy storage, conversion and restoration process of offshore wind and wave energies, etc. Dr Rizvi has published over 50 peer reviewed journal and conference articles. Currently, Dr Rizvi is involved in investigating ship design, ship recycling, ship and propeller hydrodynamics, failure mechanisms of marine structures, subsea pipes
Dr Rizvi welcomes research collaborations and PhD research proposals on the aforementioned topics. A few of his current projects are given below:
  • Fatigue, Failure, Integrity and Degradation analysis of metal and composite based Ship Hull and Marine Structures.
  •  Development of a suitable prediction methodology for non-linear wave impact loads on a hull.
  •  Development of sustainable shipbreaking/ship recycling process.
  •  Performance analysis of 3D printed propellers. 
  •  Optimisation of cost-effective and low maintenance GFRP flanges for offshore applications. 
  • Hydrodynamic performances of Hull and Propellers. 
  • Computational modelling, reliability and failure analysis of welded joints in marine applications.
