Teaching interests

My teaching in the School has ranged from Stage one design; through design teaching in stages two and three of the degree and in the Graduate Diploma. In all of this teaching I have been conscious of the need to support students confidence in their own abilities and values as a precursor for effective learning.

I am interested in design as a means of achieving a more humane and sustainable environment - in terms of the internal qualities and delights of the building ( through for example good daylighting, air quality, a positive acoustic environment ) as well as through the creation of beautiful visual and spacial experinces.

I am also interested in design as a means of exploring and addressing the challenges of improving cities, to create places where people of all ages/ genders/educational and religious backgrounds can feel they are welcome and have a voice.

I have a strong committment to the integration of sustainability into all my teaching. For me sustainability encompasses the reduction of environmental impacts, resource and energy use; the creation of healthy buidlings and settlements; the development of social equity, including the inclusion of women, indiginous peoples and many others in decision making processes about the built environment.

Research interests

• Environmental and Cultural Sustainability

• Sustainable settlements

• Gender and planning and other social equity aspects of the built environment

• Education for sustainability

Current Activity

My current focus is on the social reality of architecture, explored through the interfaces between Architectural Conservation and Sustainability agendas:that is to say on the impact that all aspects of the conception, design, craft, construction, maintenance and use of buildings has on human beings and human groups. The role of existing buildings/ design processes/ educational methods/ economics and building industry/skills etc. on the lives of people are all part of the multiple impact that building has both locally and at a more global level. Understanding the significance of the 'act of building' from anthropological, psychological, sociological, cultural and economic perspectives seems to be missing from the current dialogues on architecture.

I am currently part of the research team based in the School of Architecture, Design and Environment working on the 'Cordiale' project, focussing on Traditional buildings as part of an Interreg IVA  France(Manche)Anglaterre funded research project, with Devon County Council (lead partner), SW Protected Landscapes Group, National Parks and AONBs in Devon and Cornwall  and with Parcs Naturel Regional in Normandy and Brittany. This research project is investigating the impacts on key elements of protected landscapes in SW England and NW France(agriculture, boccage and traditional buildings) of socio-economic and climate change, and the development of appropriate methodologies for working with local communities to assist landscape management for the future.

This work has been supported by my involvement as a Centre Fellow in the HEFCE funded Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2010)This project focussed on the impact of sustainability on the curriculum, campus and community within the University of Plymouth and in HE in the UK. I lead a project entitled 'Campus as a Learning Resource' in the Centre for Sustainable Futures - with elements focussing on access to data and expertise on the Sustainability of the University Campus  in terms of Buildings, Landscape, Policies and Curriculum.
